| Brief Summary of Proposal | A new baccalaureate degree program, Aerospace Systems Engineering, is being proposed. The program will use 13 new courses, which are also being proposed (EN-08-91 THROUGH EN-08-104), but will also use many of the existing courses in Mechanical Engineering. The program will feature mandatory co-op and will draw upon the strengths of the
aerospace industrial base in Northeast Ohio.

Laboratory needs would be met by equipment now on campus. A recently acquired low-speed wind tunnel rounds out the needed equipment.
FOR PROPOSALS EN-08-90 THROUGH EN-08-104:
The College of Engineering and the Department of Mechanical Engineering have faculty expertise to cover the courses comprising the new program with the exception of an individual with a specific background in aerospace systems. The other new faculty are needed to adequately cover the new course load.
It is believed that the new course load will require what is effectively an additional ½ faculty in Electrical and Computer Engineering (one new course in the spring, one new course in the summer).
In Mechanical Engineering, the new load would require a minimum of four new faculty. That would cover the six Aerospace courses necessary in the fall (4 new, 2 newly taught), the seven in the spring (5 new, 2 newly taught), and one in the summer. One of these individuals, and the one who would need to be hired prior to the start of the program, would necessarily be the above-mentioned systems engineer with broad expertise in the aerospace industry. This faculty member would be charged with continual review of the new program as well as teaching. He/she would also interact with industry to assure the inclusion of co-op experiences that are consistent with the Aerospace Systems program needs.
The last three faculty would be added in the year following the inception of the program.
It is also seen as necessary to add one staff person to the Engineering Co-op office. The need for close cooperation between the college and the employers and the need cultivate quality co-op experiences would seem to make this a requirement. The requirement of four co-op semesters as well as a required internship following the first year would also put additional load on the Engineering Co-op Office
Office space for the new faculty would also need to be provided. |
