Changing the required courses to include the three courses: 4300:401 Steel Design, 4300:403 Reinforced Concrete Design, 4300:443 Applied Hydraulics (instead of just one of the courses) provides a well balanced graduate. | AS-03-138 | 3240:450/550 Level Change for Archaeological Field School | CSAA | Course changes only | 2003, Summer I | Final Approval Granted 03/13/2003 | 02/10/2003
| Proposal Summary: | The Archaeology Field School has been taught for 20 years as a Special Topics course, (472/572) and as such served a small number of graduate students each year. However, in 2001 the Department proposed and received a regular number for the class. In the process of securing numbers we made a mistake and did not ask for the 400/500 level so to continue to serve graduate students in other departments such as Geology, Geography and Planning, History and Education. This proposal serves to correct that error. | ||||||

| AS-03-140 | Course Additions to the Interdisciplinary Anthropology Major | CSAA | Program changes | 2003, Fall | Final Approval Granted 03/21/2003 | no | 12/23/2002 |
| Proposal Summary: | This proposal includes the addition of new Anthropology courses to the Concentration Electives segment of the major and a replacement of specific course titles in the Program Electives segment with a listing of the departments’ numbers from which a student may choose any 300-400 level class. There are no changes in the number of credit hours or the Core requirements for the major.
The addition of the new courses enriches student options in three areas of the discipline; it provides all the options necessary for the newly approved Certificate Program in Field Archaeology, it strengthens the Physical Anthropology component with an upper division class and it broadens the Cultural component with an additional course. The replacement of specific course titles in the Program Electives segment, (students are required to take a minimum of 11 credits) updates and simplifies the options for the students. Instead of the 67 classes listed as options, the students are given the option of any Anthropology/Archaeology, 3230 or 3240 course for 6 credits and the remaining 5 or more can be selected from any 300-400 level course offered by the partner departments (Biology, Classics, English, Geography and Planning, Geology, History, Modern Languages and Sociology). The change allows the student more choices and eliminates the frustration of trying to keep the Bulletin list up-to-date. There is no change in credit hours for the major.

Furthermore, the list of required and elective courses is reduced significantly to more closely focus the program on training students for a career in field archaeology.

| AS-03-28 | Program Name Change for B.A from Classical Civilization to Classical Studies | CSAA | Program changes | 2003, Fall | Final Approval Granted 03/13/2003 | 02/10/2003 | |
| Proposal Summary: | The program change streamlines offerings in an interdisciplinary package which strengthens enrollments and makes economical use of faculty time. It emphasizes the strengths of UA in contrast to a more traditional language-based program at KSU. As an interdisciplinary major the 100- and 200-level courses provided a foundation in the multiple methodologies and the breadth that involves courses from other departments. Depth is provided in the required 21 hours of 300-400 level courses in Archaeology, Classical Studies, History, and Philosophy. The college requirement for 47 credits in 300-level or above courses will encourage students to take additional courses from the nine upper division courses noted under electives. 7100:100 Art History I provides an introduction to the methodology of art history and covers ancient art. 3230:150 Cultural Anthropology provides the foundation for a cross-cultural perspective and provides a theoretical foundation for advanced archaeological courses. 3200:220 Introduction to the Ancient World surveys the cultural achievements of the ancient world and essential methodology. 3200:230 Sports and Society in Ancient Greece and Rome provides a first encounter with cross-cultural analysis. 3200:289 Mythology of Ancient Greece provides students with the fundamental "language" of ancient literature and thought. 3600:211 History of Ancient Philosophy provides essential background to the development of Greek philosophy before Aristotle. | ||||||
