| FAA-07-92 | 7400:450 Families, Individuals and Environments | FCS | Course changes only | 2007, Fall | Final Approval Granted 04/06/2007 | no | 03/01/2007 |
| Proposal Summary: | This is a proposal for a new course, 7400:450 Families, Individuals and Environments, that will constitute 3 of the 4 required credits for the core of Family and Consumer Sciences. AAFCS Accreditation recommendations included reducing the required credits of the core of Family and Consumer Sciences by consolidating the course material within one course. This change effectively changes the core requirements from 11 to 4 credits, providing flexibility for the individual programs within Family and Consumer Sciences to meet their individual and professional accreditation requirements while at the same time offering the potential for reducing the credit loads for the students. Credit loads were necessarily beyond the minimum level established by The University of Akron. This change will allow the individual programs to be more competitive on a state and national level. No added resources will be necessary as fewer sections of the current core courses will need to be offered. Faculty will absorb the teaching of this new course within their teaching load. | ||||||

| NU 07 01 | BSN for RNs Program | Nursing | Program changes | 2007, Summer I | Final Approval Granted 10/05/2007 | yes | 05/14/2007 |
| Proposal Summary: | This proposal is a revision of the RN/BSN Program that includes a minor course title change, objective changes to reflect current nursing theory and practice, and a reduction in credit hours for two courses, 8200:405 Nursing of the Healthy Individual from 5 to 3 credits and 8200:415 Nursing Care of Individuals with Complex Health Problems from 5 to 3 credits. The two credits from each of these courses are being used to offer two new courses
reflecting national trends in nursing curriculum: 8200:406 Palliative Nursing Care (2 cr) and 8200:448 Professional Nursing/RN Capstone (2 cr). The theory and clinical components of two courses are being separated to facilitate student progression in addition to giving students more flexibility; 8200:445 Nursing of Communities/RN (Lecture) will be 3 credits and the clinical component will be 8200:444 Nursing of Communities/RN Practicum (2 cr); and 8200:446 Professional Nursing Leadership will be 3 credits and the clinical component will be 8200:447 Professional Nursing Leadership Practicum 2 credits. Courses 406,415,448,may be offered online as web-based courses on the University of Akron and Wayne Campuses. They will be offered as traditional F2F courses at LCCC. Students can choose to take the online option through the University of Akron.
| NU-07-02 | Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) | Nursing | Program changes | 2008, Fall | Final Approval Granted 10/05/2007 | no | 05/14/2007 |
| Proposal Summary: | This purpose of this proposal is to revise course sequencing and move the anatomy and physiology courses from the sophomore level to the freshman level in the BSN program. The students will have completed the majority of their science courses before entering the nursing major. This change will better prepare the sophomore and junior level nursing students to manage the course content in nursing courses and function more effectively in the clinical settings as they will have acquired the requisite knowledge and skills to manage clinical assignments in todays increasingly complex acute care and community settings. The rationale for changing the course sequencing is: 1) this curriculum was developed in 1992-1993 and must be revised to be in concert with accreditation requirements; 2) the current curriculum plan makes it very difficult for students and faculty to function effectively in the clinical setting when caring for very acutely ill patients; 3) students are learning about subject matter that is based on anatomy and physiology without having had those courses which makes a barrier to effective teaching and learning; 4) students are expected to give medications and therefore, must have knowledge of the pharmacology-but have not had the pharmacology course, nor the pathophysiology course, until the junior year at which point they have been in the major for 1.5 years. All of these points lead to faculty and student frustration and anxiety about safety issues in clinical practice. Finally, anatomy and physiology is taken in the freshman year in most programs in the country. This change would faciltiate student success and increase safety as faculty must supervise 8-10 students each caring for 1-2 acutely ill patients. | ||||||
| NU-07-03 | Advanced Practice Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing | Nursing | Program changes | 2007, Fall | Final Approval Granted 10/05/2007 | yes | 05/14/2007 |
| Proposal Summary: | The Behavioral Health Nursing Nurse Practitioiner track in the Master's in Nursing program will be renamed to Advanced Practice Psychiatric Mental health Nursing to reflect contemporary practices in Nursing. The changes are based on Essentials of Graduate Education, Scope and Standards of Practice, State Boards of Nursing Title Recognition guidelines and national certification requirements. The proposed revision in curriculum will include the theoretical and evidenced-based knowledge and skills and clinical practicum hours necessary to sit for certification in the specialty and subsequently be certified as a psychiatric nurse practitioner. Structural changes include separation of the theoretical content from the clinical practicum in 8200:699 Practicum: Behavioral Health Nursing to be consistent with the other courses offered in the track. This change facilitates graduate student progression and allows flexibility in scheduling for working nurses. The assessment course will focus on mental health and a revision of the organization and focus of Behavioral Health I, II, III, and IV is included. | ||||||
| NU-07-04 | Child and Adolescent Health Nursing Nurse Practitioner Track | Nursing | Program changes | 2007, Summer I | Final Approval Granted 11/02/2007 | yes | 05/14/2007 |
| Proposal Summary: | This proposal is revising and expanding the current Child and Adolescent Health Nurse Practitioner track to include two options: The current focus on primary health care and a second option will focus on child and adolescent acute care. This change is necessary to prepare pediatric nurse practitioners with the substantive content needed to sit for certification as an acute care pediatric nurse practitioner through the national certifying organization Pediatric Nursing Certification Board(PNCB). Students may choose either option which will be 45 credits or they may add the four acute care courses for a total of 55 credits so that they are prepared to sit for both certifying examinations, the primary health care pediatric nurse practitioner certification or the pediatric acute nurse practitioner certification. This expansion is in response to the regional and national demand for acute care pediatric nurse practitioners. There are only 3 certified acute care pediatric nurse practitioners in Ohio. | ||||||
| NU-07-05 | MPH Degree Option for MD Students | Nursing | Program changes | 2008, Summer I | Under development 03/30/2007 | yes | |
| Proposal Summary: | Introduction
This proposal is a change in the current MPH program that would give the opportunity to MD students to acquire a MPH degree while getting their MD degree. The proposal present the curriculum for the MPH degree and the students would recive their separate degrees between the Consortium of Eastern Ohio Master of Public Health (CEOMPH) program and the MD program at The Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine. The MPH program includes the following partners: The University of Akron, Cleveland State University, Kent State University, Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine, Ohio University, and Youngstown State University. Students earn their Medical Doctor from Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine. Background Consortium of Eastern Ohio Master of Public Health The Consortium of Eastern Ohio Master of Public Health program began in 1999 and was accredited by the Council on Education in Public Health in 2003. It is a partnership of six institutions: The University of Akron (UA), Cleveland State University (CSU), Kent State University (KSU), Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine (NEOUCOM), Ohio University (OU), and Youngstown State University (YSU). The program is centrally administered by Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine. CEOMPH was established to meet the needs of practicing health professionals in the Northeast Ohio area who wish to expand their role in improving community health (although it also accepts more traditional students who meet the admissions criteria). Students enroll in the program through any one of the five participating university partners (UA, CSU, KSU, OU or YSU), and are awarded their degree by that university. The diplomas carry the names of all participating program partners. Faculty from all six partner institutions, as well as from community public health agencies, teach the core courses which are offered exclusively on Saturdays using interactive videoconferencing technology. This allows the student to attend lectures at the available campus or institution of his/her choice. Elective courses, which can be taken at any of the participating universities, are generally offered in the evening or online. The Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine The Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine (NEOUCOM) offers students the opportunity to complete their Bachelor of Science degree in two years at one of the partner universities that make up the NEOUCOM consortium: The University of Akron, Kent State University and Youngstown State University. NEOUCOM’s combined B.S./M.D. program is one of the largest B.S./M.D. programs in the country. High school students admitted to the B.S./M.D. program receive a reserved seat in medical school while completing their undergraduate requirements. Students then transition to NEOUCOM and complete four years of medical school. NEOUCOM also offers a direct entry route to medical school for students who have completed their premedical studies at another college or university. Typically, 20 percent of the first-year medical school students are admitted to the College of Medicine through direct entry. Transfer students from other medical schools are considered for admission on a space available basis.

| AS-07-085 | Public Sector Labor Relations | PAUS | Course changes only | 2007, Fall | Final Approval Granted 10/05/2007 | no | 09/07/2007 |
| Proposal Summary: | This course has been taught three times as a special topics course. Public employees unions are the most rapidly growing segment of unionization. Public managers need to understand the public-specific rules which define labor-management relations in the public sector. Therefore this course is a necessary complement to the Public Personnel Management class required for those seeking the MPA degree. The department currently employees a skilled and experienced public sector personnel director as a part-time time faculty member to teach this course, but there are at least three persons on the faculty with the academic credentials and experience to teach the course. | ||||||
| AS-07-086 | Creating web-based versions of courses for existing certificate program | PAUS | Course changes only | 2007, Fall | Final Approval Granted 10/05/2009 | yes | 05/25/2009 |
| Proposal Summary: | In 2003 the certificate program for the Department of Public Administration and Urban Studies was revised. The change in the certificate program was premised on the use of a combination of web-based and secondarily weekend courses as a way to reach a wider audience of public and non-profit sector managers. Without approval to offer course as web-based courses we cannot offer the certificate, or at least not offer it in the way it was intended. Rather than request a change for every course in the certificate program, the department at this time is seeking only approval for selected courses in four certificates--- Public Management, Non-profit Management, Policy Analysis and Program Evaluation. Those courses would be as follows: 3980:600, 3980:601, 3980:611, 3980:615, 3980:617, 3980:662, 3980:663, and 3980:671. These courses were selected because they have been taught by faculty with prior web-based course experience and/or Springboard instruction. It is the intention of the department to offer both "classroom" based and web-based versions of these courses in the future. Based upon the experience with web-enhanced courses we anticipate few changes in the format and structure of the courses. In those courses that have already been offered in the web-enhanced medium little more than a shift of the delivery of assignments and an expansion of the number of electronic interactions (chat rooms, etc.) will be required to convert the course from web-enhanced to web-based. For the courses which have not yet been offered in even the web-enhanced format then the change to the instructional approach is more extensive. The changes to be made will focus on two elements: first, a more aggressive stance on issues concerning plagiarism, with the University web information being linked to each syllabus; and, second, a restructuring of the delivery of lectures and assignments. To reflect the expectation of the Buchtel College Council each course will require a minimum of weekly interaction with the instructor either in a chat room or in assignments submitted via e-mail. With the obvious exception of in-class presentations, the web-based classes will be quite similar in content, structure and assessment methods as the web-enhanced and land-based courses.
The syllabi for the web-based courses proposed here are modified versions of the current classroom based courses. For reasons of accreditation and good pedagogy the web-based courses proposed herein will have the same learning outcomes and readings as the parallel traditional formatted courses.
