| GS-09-01 | Graduate School Non-Degree Admits | Graduate School | Program changes | 2010, Fall | Proposal Withdrawn 12/01/2009 | no | 00/00/0000 |
| Proposal Summary: | ISSUE: Currently, applicants admitted under the graduate admission classification of "Non-Degree" are admitted directly by the Graduate School. In contrast, however, the coding in PeopleSoft for Non-Degree's is reflected as an admission recommendation by the academic unit.
EXAMPLE: When Graduate School admits an applicant to Management as a Non-Degree, it is reflected in PeopleSoft with an Academic Program of BUSGN and an Academic Plan of 650000NDG ... erroneously suggesting that CBA recommended admission (rather than the Graduate School). PROPOSAL: As an academic unit, the Graduate School proposes that all Non-Degree admits be coded in PeopleSoft under one Graduate School Academic Program and Plan code (as determined by the Registrar's Office). This will enable Non-Degree student data to be reflected in an accurate and consistent fashion.
| GS-10-01 | Graduate School Non-Degree Admits | Graduate School | Program changes | 2010, Fall | Final Approval Granted 03/31/2010 | no | 02/08/2010 |
| Proposal Summary: | ISSUE: Currently, applicants admitted under the graduate admission classification of "Non-Degree" are admitted directly by the Graduate School. In contrast, however, the coding in PeopleSoft for Non-Degree's is reflected as an admission recommendation by the academic unit. As a result of this coding, when students are completing the graduate application, they are required to choose an area of study ... when in fact they are eligible to register for any graduate course (assuming the student has the necessary prerequisites).
EXAMPLE: When Graduate School admits an applicant to Management as a Non-Degree, it is reflected in PeopleSoft with an Academic Program of BUSGN and an Academic Plan of 650000NDG ... erroneously suggesting that CBA recommended admission (rather than the Graduate School) and that the student would only be taking courses in Management. PROPOSAL: As an academic unit, the Graduate School proposes that all Non-Degree admits be coded in PeopleSoft under one Graduate School Academic Program and Plan code (as determined by the Registrar's Office). This will enable Non-Degree student data to be reflected in an accurate manner while reflecting the true intent of the student.

| AS-10-002 | New Course, 3400:221 Humanities in the World Since 1300 | History | Course changes only | 2010, Fall | Final Approval Granted 11/22/2010 | no | 11/01/2010 |
| Proposal Summary: | In keeping with College and University initiatives toward globalizing the curriculum, this new course, 3400:221 Humanities in the World Since 1300, expands the content coverage of the present 3400:211, and will introduce students to global cultural exchanges since the fourteenth century. Although the "West," the exclusive focus of the present 3400:211, will not be neglected, the aim is to situate the humanities in a much wider context that includes intercultural exchanges on a global scale. This course will replace 211 (which we will delete next academic year), and students will be able to choose to take either 210 or 221 for the required Humanites course.

| AS-10-005 | Title Change, Undergraduate Course 3400: 378 Colonial Latin America | History | Course changes only | 2010, Fall | Final Approval Granted 05/17/2010 | no | 03/23/2010 |
| Proposal Summary: | We are proposing a title change for the undergraduate history course 3400: 378, currently entitled "Colonial Latin America" to "Spanish Conquest and Colonization of the Americas." This title change would affect this course as listed in the History Major section of the Undergraduate Bulletin as well as in the list of courses of the Latin American Studies Certificate program. The rationale for this proposal is to make the title of the course more focused, clear, and appealing even for undergraduate students who may not be familiar with the periodization of Latin American history. This will help in increasing enrollments not only from History majors, but from students majoring in other disciplines, such as Education, Spanish, etc. | ||||||

Upon acceptance, a student will be cleared to complete the remaining electives of the bachelor’s degree and 30 credits of graduate work for the master’s degree in the last two years. A student will be eligible for a graduate assistantship only in these last two years and must be registered for at least nine graduate credits in each of those semesters.

| Proposal Summary: | The Department of History is streamlining the graduate research seminar by
creating a single research (writing) seminar for graduate students, and deleting all the writing seminars. We are entitling the new course “Graduate Research Seminar in History” and numbering it 601, which will signal that it is inclusive of all areas and common to all graduate students and faculty. This approach also allows us to manage scheduling and graduate course enrollments more effectively. We are also adding a one credit course "Option Paper Completion," 3400:602 for the semester that MA students are completing their research option papers.

| NU-10-002 | Professional Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Program | Nursing | New program | 2011, Spring | Final Approval Granted 06/27/2011 | no | 11/04/2010 |
| Proposal Summary: | The College of Nursing at The University of Akron proposes to implement a professional nursing doctoral degree program that will move the advanced practice tracks and the advanced role track Nursing Administration in the master’s degree program to the clinical doctoral level consistent with recommendations of the American Association of Colleges in Nursing. This proposal was developed in collaboration with Kent State University College of Nursing. Six of the courses are to be offered jointly, three at the University of Akron College of Nursing and three at Kent State University. All other courses in the program will be offered at each university. Authorized by the Ohio Board of Nursing (Ohio Revised Code 4723- Nurse Practice Act), advanced practice nurse roles include certified clinical nurse specialists, certified nurse practitioners, certified nurse anesthetists, and certified nurse midwives. Additionally we will include Nursing Administration which prepares nurses for advanced management roles in nursing organizations. Both universities currently have large, high quality master’s programs that lead to national certification and State Board credentialing of advanced practice nurses. In 2004, the American Association of Colleges in Nursing (AACN) established the position that all advanced practice master’s degree programs were to transition to the doctoral level by 2015. On October 30, 2006, the AACN member institutions endorsed the Essentials of Doctoral Education for Advanced Practice Nursing (2006). Further, in 2008, the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), the accrediting arm of AACN, approved the revised Standards for Accreditation of Baccalaureate and Graduate Degree Programs (2008), which now include DNP programs. These guidelines and standards, in combination with the Criteria for Evaluation of Nurse Practitioner Programs (National Task Force, 2008), were used to develop the proposed DNP program.
Three proposals will be submitted: 1)this proposal NU-10-002 for development of the baccalaureate to DNP which will be phased in at a later date; and two related proposals-A) the second proposal NU-10-003 Post MSN Professional Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP Certificate for those master's prepared advanced practice nurses holding national certification as Nurse Practitioners, Clinical Nurse Specialists, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists or Nurse Midwives; and B) NU-10-004 a Post MSN Professional Doctor of Nursing Practice for those master's prepared nurses who do not have a clinical masters degree preparing them for advanced practice or for an Advanced Role in Nursing Administration. Proposal NU-10-002 BSN to DNP willl be phased in when the specialty tracks offered through the MSN are fully integrated into the DNP.
