Proposal Summary:One course 8200:623 Adult/Gero Health Nursing Practicum 2 credits is being deleted and a new course 8200:631 Adult/Gero Health Nursing NP IV Practicum, 3 cr hrs is being added. This change will add 1 credit to the track which is necessary in order for NP students to acquire sufficient supervised practicum contact hours with patients/clients to sit for certification. This change is proposed to meet the national standards mandated in the Consensus Model for Advanced Practice Nursing: APRN Regulation: Licensure, Accreditation, Certification & Education (National Council of State Boards of Nursing, July 7, 2008). That document has set a deadline for requiring that all NP programs revise their single focus adult NP and gero NP programs into a dual focus adult/gero NP program. The national certification organizations will have their certification tests available in 2012. Classes entering the program fall 2011 will graduate May 2013. The faculty determined that this class would be the ideal time to make the changes mandatory.

02/10/2011
 no11/25/2010
Proposal Summary:This proposal is written only to clarify how courses have been offered per the Higher Learning Commission’s (HLC) new definition of distance education. Prior to the June 2010 policy change, courses that were offered by Distance Learning (DL) technology did not fall into the definition of Distance Education as defined by the HLC. Coursework in the program may be (traditionally has been) offered in the DL format. This proposal only addresses the HLC policy 3.2 that courses offered in a DL format must be reported to the HLC. Formal acceptance of this proposal is necessary so the reporting departments on campus are fully aware of the potential of DL offerings within the program.

Proposal Summary:This proposal specifies two changes specifically directed to the Adult/Gerontological Nurse Practitioner track:

1. Change in requirements to include at least 12 months of current clinical experience in acute medical/surgical nursing or acute long-term care within the last two years.

2. This change relates to progression in the track:
Students must achieve a B- or higher in core specialty courses: 8200:608 Pathophysiological Concepts 3 crs; 8200:610 Advanced Adult/Gero Assessment w/Practicum 3 crs and 8200:612 Advanced Clinical Pharmacology and all Adult/Gero Specialty Clinical Track courses needed to progress in the Adult/Gerontological Nurse Practitioner Track.
These changes are necessary as students who do not have current acute medical-surgical nursing clinical experience for at least 12 months, and those who receive a C+ or lower are not successful in progression in the track and these courses are fundamental to competencies required in the Adult/Gero Nurse Practitioner role as a direct care provider. These changes are being to increase student success.
