| AS-06-70 | Change prerequisites for all graduate-level courses in physics | Physics | Course changes only | 2006, Fall | Final Approval Granted 04/07/2006 | no | 03/13/2006 |
| Proposal Summary: | This is a blanket proposal to change prerequisites for all 500-, and 600-level graduate level courses in physics (3650) from specific course numbers to “Admission to the Physics Master’s program or permission”.

This may lead to the situation where transfer students, who do not have these UA prerequisites, may encounter problems when trying to register. Removing the prerequisite check will help to avoid this problem. The current blanket proposal will bring us into compliance with the APC resolution. It will also allow most students to register by themselves and will not require the physics department administrative assistant to manually register them.

| Proposal Summary: | In order for students to maintain a consistent level of algebraic skill throughout the entire Technical Mathematics sequence of courses (TM I,II,III, and IV), and in order for them to be appropriately prepared for Technical Calculus I and II, it has been found necessary to include a review of factoring and algebraic fractions in TM III. In addition, many students taking TM III begin their mathematical course work with TM II instead of TM I, hence a review of factoring and fractions, topics covered in TM I, increases their chances of successfully completing Technical Mathematics sequence of courses.
2) Vectors are covered in great detail in the Engineering and Science Technology Department's mechanics course and, therefore, can be eliminated from TM III without any loss to our students. (Note: Discussions have been held with the Engineering and Science Technology faculty regarding this issue.)

| AS-06-58 | Change prerequisites for all graduate-level courses in computer science | Comp Sci | Course changes only | 2006, Spring | Final Approval Granted 04/07/2006 | no | 03/13/2006 |
| Proposal Summary: | This is a blanket proposal to change prerequisites for all graduate-level 3460 courses in the ranges of 508-580 and 626-680 from specific course numbers to "Admission to the Computer Science Master’s Program or permission".
Rationale: At the December 2004 meeting of the Faculty Senate, a resolution presented by the Academic Policies Committee (APC) was passed. This action resulted in prerequisite checking being turned on by default in the PeopleSoft registration system for all courses. In May 2005 the Faculty Senate also passed a resolution so that undergraduate course numbers may not be used as prerequisites for graduate-level courses. As a result of the changes to the prerequisite structure, most graduate students of Computer Science are prevented from doing the registration themselves. The department administrative assistant has had to manually register our graduate students. The idea behind prerequisites is to inform students of the background that is considered necessary to succeed in the course. In the Department of Computer Science, at the undergraduate level the prerequisites were enforced; at the graduate level, they were purely informative. The combination of enforcing prerequisites at the graduate level and not permitting undergraduate course numbers to be used will require a different standard for those prerequisites. The current blanket proposal will enable most graduate students admitted to the computer science program to do online registration by themselves.
