| AS-08-064 | new course: Ottoman State and Society (3400:489) | History | Course changes only | 2008, Fall | Final Approval Granted 03/10/2008 | no | 02/12/2008 |
| Proposal Summary: | This proposal is to add 3400:489 Ottoman State and Society to the History offerings. (See also AS-08-065 for the 589 portion.) This course will add an important area of study to the History offerings. The Ottoman Empire ruled over the crossroads of Eurasia and North Africa for six centuries; from the heartland of Anatolia in what is now Turkey, the empire stretched from Algeria to Iraq, from the gates of Vienna to Yemen. This enduring multiethnic Islamic empire was soon competitive with, if not superior to, European empires in terms of military and economic power, as well as cultural wealth. By the time the Ottoman Empire came to an end in the early 20th century, caught between the imperialist ambitions of Europe and Russia and nationalist rebellions in its own provinces, it appeared impoverished and vulnerable to the modernizing West. What happened along the way? And how did this empire at the center of the Old World impact and react to the European, African, and Asian societies on its frontiers? What are the facts and fictions of Ottoman decline? The Imperial Harem? Tradition and modernity? What was the legacy of the Ottoman Empire on its successor states? This course was taught as a special topics course in Spring 2006. | ||||||

| Proposal Summary: | As Iraqis debate the nature of the society they hope to rebuild after the war, history becomes an important guide, weapon, and symbol not only of the past but for the future of Iraq. This course will offer a complex and nuanced look into the history of Iraq and will situate current events firmly in their historical context. In addition to focus on Iraqi state and society, this course will also spend considerable time examining the history behind the creation of a new Iraqi, and yet non-Iraqi, entity--Kurdistan, in the context of this quasi-state’s new slogan, “Kurdistan: The Other Iraq.” This course has previously been taught under the 300-level special topics number. | ||||||

Change prerequisites to include Biology so students can take it without having had Paleobiology. This course deals with advanced topics in macroevolutionary theory as examined through the fossil record. It does not focus on the same topics as Evolutionary Biology (3100:316), but it would definitely complement it.

| AS-08-083 | Change Course Title, Description and Number of 3400: 472 Latin America: Origins of Nationality | History | Course changes only | 2008, Fall | Final Approval Granted 05/02/2008 | no | 03/26/2008 |
| Proposal Summary: | This proposal is to change the title, bulletin description, and number of the course 3400: 472 "Latin America: Origins of Nationality" to 3400: 378 "Colonial Latin America". The new title reflects shifts in the field of Latin American history and better describes the contents of the course. The change in number from a 400 level to a 300 level course is designed to attract more students, both history majors and non-majors, at an earlier stage in their undergraduate careers. The course also contributes to the Latin American Studies Certificate Program, and at the 300 level allows students enrolled in it to familiarize themselves with the region at an earlier stage than a 400 level course would allow. The course surveys the history of Latin America since the period of Spanish and Portuguese colonization in the early sixteenth century to the revolutions of independence in the early nineteenth century. It explores the development of colonial political, economic and religious institutions; the racial and gender hierarchies that emerged in colonial society; and the strategies of resistance and adaptation to colonial rule by various groups. | ||||||
| AS-08-084 | Course deletion: 3400: 572 Latin America: Origins of Nationality | History | Course changes only | 2008, Fall | Final Approval Granted 05/02/2008 | no | 04/07/2008 |
| Proposal Summary: | This proposal is to delete the course 3400: 572 "Latin America: Origins of Nationality". This course is the graduate component of a slash course, designed to be taught in conjunction with the undergraduate course 3400: 472: "Latin America: Origins of Nationality". Since the Department of History is proposing to change the undergraduate portion of this course to the 300 level (see proposal AS-08-083), this course will no longer be a viable slash course at the graduate level. As the Faculty of the Department of History are currently updating the offerings in Latin American history, other more specialized courses are being proposed for the graduate level (see, e.g. proposal AS-08-89) instead of broad surveys for the region as whole, as 3400:572 is. | ||||||
| AS-08-085 | Change Course Title, Description, and Number of 3400: 473 Latin America: The 20th Century | History | Course changes only | 2008, Fall | Final Approval Granted 05/02/2008 | no | 04/01/2008 |
| Proposal Summary: | This proposal is to change the title, bulletin description, and number of the course 3400: 473 "Latin America: The 20th Century" to 3400: 379 "Modern Latin America". The new title reflects changes in the field of Latin American History and better describes the contents of the course, which constitutes a survey of the history of Latin America during the national period, including the nineteenth century, the twentieth century and into the present. | ||||||

| Proposal Summary: | The History Department would like to propose a new course on the History of Women in Latin America. This course will help expand the Department's offerings in non-western topics and gender, and in this way it will also contribute to the University's current emphasis on global studies. The course will also be a valuable addition to the Latin American Studies Certificate program. The course examines changes and continuities in the lives of Latin American women since the colonial period until the present. The courses focuses on the ideologies of gender that have assigned specific places and roles for women of different racial, ethnic and class backgrounds, as well as the ways in which women have approximated, challenged and transformed those gender definitions in their daily lives. The course also introduces students to theories and methodologies in the study of women's history. | ||||||

| Proposal Summary: | When the World Civilization courses, 3400:385-391, were created many years ago, it was thought best to wait and expose students to non-American, non-European areas of the world in their junior year. Globalization and an increased emphasis at UA on global studies makes that attitude obsolete. Students need to have earlier access to these courses. | Proposal Summary: | Our new East Asian specialist, Gang Zhao, would prefer to position a history of Japan with a broader East Asian context. The existing course description implies the broader context: "Emphasis on modernization and the rise of the Japanese empire, 1894-1945" which was an East Asia empire and modern East Asia cannot be described without considerable reference to it. | NU-08-05 | Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing-Course additions | Nursing | Program changes | 2008, Spring | College status: approved 03/31/2008 | yes | 00/00/0000 |
| Proposal Summary: | This course is one in a series of three courses developed in response to concerns about the state of the behavioral health workforce, including registered nurses with bacaalaureate degrees or students at the graduate level of education. Behavioral health services are even more human resource intensive than other areas of health care, therefore workforce development is critical. Asynchronous online education is necessary to faciltiate access because the behavioral healthcare organization often cannot afford to take nurses out of service for face to face educational activities. Because innovations in behavioral healthcare based on research take much too long to be transferred to practice the current nursing workforce is unprepared to deal with the practices of the current behavioral health system, which demands skills to work outside the hospital setting, in the community, schools, prisons, homeless shelters, and home care settings. Behavioral health systems today require nurses who are prepared to work with persons with serious mental illness and who are culturally competent, promote resiliency and recovery, and are capable of working in collaborative relationships. This course seeks to supply the education necessary to work effectively with the vulnerable seriously and persistently mentally ill population. Dr. Galon was funded for the development of this series of courses by the Department of Mental Health (ODMH) because of her knowledge and expertise in the care of and public policy issues related to the severly persistently mentally ill. | ||||||

| WC-08-02 | Social Services Practicum and Seminar changes | Wayne | Course changes only | 2008, Fall | Final Approval Granted 03/10/2008 | no | 02/19/2008 |
| Proposal Summary: | Presently, two practicum experiences, 2260:285 Social Services Practicum I and 2260:287 Social Services Practicum II, are required for students seeking the associate degree in Social Services Technology. Similarly, students who are pursuing either the Certificate in Gerontological Social Services or the Certificate in Therapeutic Activities are required to complete one field experience specific to the objective of the certificate. Under the current course structure, there is no clear way to identify in the student's record what actual field experience occurred in any practicum. Additionally, the distinction between the first and second practicum ( I & II) is unnecessary. This proposal will modify the two existing practica and create a new third practicum experience to differentiate types of field work and to delineate clearly which practicum experiences fulfill certificate and/or associate degree requirements.
Two new courses are being added to the associate degree curriculum to replace Social Services Practicum Seminar, previously taken concurrently with each social services practicum. Field Work Orientation, will be taken prior to the first practicum experience, and Field Work Evaluation will be taken concurrently with the first practicum. It includes a structured process of assessment and preparation for the second practicum. Modified seminars will be incorporated into each of the practicum experiences.
| WC-08-03 | Program modifications to Social Services Tech. Step-Up program reflecting practicum modifications outlined in WC-08-02 | Wayne | Program changes | 2008, Fall | Final Approval Granted 03/10/2008 | no | 02/19/2008 |
| Proposal Summary: | Two practicum experiences, presently 2260:285 Social Services Practicum I and 2260:287 Social Services Practicum II, are required for the associate degree. These two practica are being modified (see proposal WC-08-02) into three distinct kinds of field work experiences. Two of the proposed practica, Practicum in Therapeutic Activities and Long-term Care and Practicum in Gerontological Social Services, are being added not only to differentiate types of field work, but also to more clearly identify which practicum experiences fulfill certificate and/or associate degree requirements. 2260:285 Social Services Practicum will remain as one field work option that fulfills only associate degree requirements and that is not in an aging setting or primarily involving therapeutic activities. All associate degree students will take 2260:285 Social Services Practicum for one semester. Students who are not pursuing one of the two aging-related certificates will enroll in a second semester of 2260:285 Social Services Practicum in a different non-aging setting.
Two new courses (see WC-08-02) are also being added to the associate degree curriculum to replace Social Services Practicum Seminar, previously taken concurrently with each social services practicum. 2260:293 Field Work Orientation will be taken prior to enrolling for the first practicum, and 2260:294 Field Work Evaluation will be taken concurrently with the first practicum and include a structured process of assessment and preparation for the second practicum. Modified seminars are also being incorporated into all of the practicum experiences themselves.
| WC-08-04 | Program changes to the Gerontological Social Services Certificate reflecting practicum modifications in WC-08-02 | Wayne | Program changes | 2008, Fall | Final Approval Granted 03/10/2008 | no | 02/19/2008 |
| Proposal Summary: | With changes being made to the associate degree, there will be two options available for students with regard to the field work requirement for the Certificate in Gerontological Social Services. One of these, 2260:289 Practicum in Gerontological Social Services, is the type of field work currently completed by taking a social services practicum in an aging setting. It can fulfill the field work required for the gerontology certificate and serve as one of the two practica required for the associate degree. This practicum is being created to differentiate it from an associate degree practicum in a non-aging setting. The other new field work option is 2260:287 Practicum in Therapeutic Activities and Long-term Care, which can be used to fulfill the field work requirement for the Certificate in Gerontological Social Services, the Certificate in Therapeutic Activities, and the associate degree. See WC-08-02 for more details. | ||||||
| WC-08-05 | Program modifications to the Therapeutic Activities Certificate reflecting practicum modifications in WC-08-02 | Wayne | Program changes | 2008, Fall | Final Approval Granted 03/10/2008 | no | 02/19/2008 |
| Proposal Summary: | With the addition of new practicum options for the associate degree, the Certificate in Therapeutic Activities is being changed so that students can use either "Practicum in Therapeutic Activities" (the only field work option currently available) or "Practicum in Therapeutic Activities and Long-term Care" (a new option) to fulfill the field work requirement for the certificate. This new practicum, unlike the current one required for the certificate, can be used, as well, to fulfill the field work requirement for the Certificate in Gerontological Social Services and as one of the two practica required for the associate degree. | ||||||
