AS-03-140Course Additions to the Interdisciplinary Anthropology Major CSAAProgram changes2003, FallFinal Approval Granted
03/21/2003
 no12/23/2002
Proposal Summary:This proposal includes the addition of new Anthropology courses to the Concentration Electives segment of the major and a replacement of specific course titles in the Program Electives segment with a listing of the departments’ numbers from which a student may choose any 300-400 level class. There are no changes in the number of credit hours or the Core requirements for the major.

The addition of the new courses enriches student options in three areas of the discipline; it provides all the options necessary for the newly approved Certificate Program in Field Archaeology, it strengthens the Physical Anthropology component with an upper division class and it broadens the Cultural component with an additional course.

The replacement of specific course titles in the Program Electives segment, (students are required to take a minimum of 11 credits) updates and simplifies the options for the students. Instead of the 67 classes listed as options, the students are given the option of any Anthropology/Archaeology, 3230 or 3240 course for 6 credits and the remaining 5 or more can be selected from any 300-400 level course offered by the partner departments (Biology, Classics, English, Geography and Planning, Geology, History, Modern Languages and Sociology). The change allows the student more choices and eliminates the frustration of trying to keep the Bulletin list up-to-date. There is no change in credit hours for the major.

It emphasizes the strengths of UA in contrast to a more traditional language-based program at KSU. As an interdisciplinary major the 100- and 200-level courses provided a foundation in the multiple methodologies and the breadth that involves courses from other departments. Depth is provided in the required 21 hours of 300-400 level courses in Archaeology, Classical Studies, History, and Philosophy. The college requirement for 47 credits in 300-level or above courses will encourage students to take additional courses from the nine upper division courses noted under electives. 7100:100 Art History I provides an introduction to the methodology of art history and covers ancient art. 3230:150 Cultural Anthropology provides the foundation for a cross-cultural perspective and provides a theoretical foundation for advanced archaeological courses. 3200:220 Introduction to the Ancient World surveys the cultural achievements of the ancient world and essential methodology. 3200:230 Sports and Society in Ancient Greece and Rome provides a first encounter with cross-cultural analysis. 3200:289 Mythology of Ancient Greece provides students with the fundamental "language" of ancient literature and thought. 3600:211 History of Ancient Philosophy provides essential background to the development of Greek philosophy before Aristotle.

 12/10/2002
Proposal Summary:We are strengthening our undergraduate physics major curriculum by restructuring and streamlining our course offerings. Six electives will be deleted (accompanying course change proposals to do this have also been submitted, AS-03-41 through 46). Modeling and Simulation (3650:350) will now be made a requirement for the BS Physics degree which is the purpose of the current proposal, AS-03-47. Modeling and Simulation will also be made a prerequisite for our 400-level courses (accompanying course change proposals have been submitted for this: AS-03-49 through 52, and AS-03-76). Also, in another course change proposal (AS-03-48), we request to increase the number of credit hours for Modeling and Simulation from three to four to cover some of the material lost due to course deletions.

Proposal Summary:We wish to increase the number of credit hours for Modeling and Simulation (3650:350) from three to four. Details of the streamlining can be found in accompanying submissions (AS-03-41 through 47, AS-03-49 through 52, and AS-03-76).
Some of the material omitted due to the deletion of one of these courses will now be covered on Modeling and Simulation and hence the need for an extra credit hour to cover it.

AS-03-53Change of 240 to 300-level class PsychologyCourse changes only2003, FallFinal Approval Granted
01/31/2003
 12/06/2002
Proposal Summary:Industrial/Organizational Psychology (240) is typically an advanced class in most undergraduate curricula across the U.S. However, here at The University of Akron, it has traditionally had a 200-level number even though the course has been taught as if it were a 300-level class. This change will simply make the course that we've been teaching here match with the level signified by its new number, 380. It also will place it among its peer classes which includes the Psychology Department's other 300-level classes. This number change should help students identify the level, requirements, and expectations involved in this course.
