| BA-99-35 | Accounting | Program changes | 1999, Fall | Final Approval Granted 04/15/1999 | no | 04/19/1999 | |
| Proposal Summary: | During our recent AACSB reaccreditation visit, the
AACSB representatives urged the School of Accountancy to revise the description of the Master of Science in Accountancy to make the program accessible to undergraduate accounting majors. The importance of this change is driven by a change in Ohio law. After January 1, 2000, Ohio Law will require accounting majors to complete 150 semester hours of college credit as prerequisite for eligibility to sit for the Uniform Certified Public Accounting (CPA) examination. There is also a change in the curriculum for MSA students without undergraduate degrees in accounting which brings the program into line with current AACSB standards and reduces the required number of credit hours from 36 to 33 hours. This is essentially a change in the Bulletin description to separate the program description into one for undergraduate accounting majors and one for students without undergraduate accounting majors. The primary differences in the program for these two classes of students involve Foundation Courses (which will probably not be required of undergraduate accounting majors) and some alternative (existing), graduate courses for accounting majors to avoid repetition of material covered in undergraduate coursework. For students with undergraduate degrees in areas other than accounting, there is the elimination of one accounting elective, reducing the program from 36 to 33 semester hours. Non-accounting electives are maintained at 6, but all must all be taken at the 600 level.

| Proposal Summary: | Changes in the Bulletin Description of the Bachelor of
Science in Accounting Program to incorporate changes in Ohio Law. Based on new Ohio legislation, students will need 150- semester credit hours to sit for the Uniform CPA Examination beginning January 1, 2000. The Bachelor of Science in Accounting Program remains unchanged from the previous Bulletin. The change describes the students' options under Ohio Law and encourages students who plan careers in Public Accounting to complete a minor, a certificate program, or plan to pursue a Master of Science in Accountancy.

| WC-99-01 | Wayne | Course changes only | 1998, Fall | Final Approval Granted 03/18/1999 | yes | 10/06/1998 | |
| Proposal Summary: | Our students have numerous concerns in their lives: work responsibilities, family obligations, social commitments, and community involvement. We know from experience that many have had difficulty in scheduling classes, or may not be able to take a specific course during the desired semester. Distance education can accommodate many of the issues that may restrict someone from otherwise attending a traditional classroom and advancing their studies.
Web-based instruction also presents an opportunity to serve a new market segment that will increase enrollment. Individuals that are not currently able to attend traditional classes for various reasons may very well start an educational program via the Web. As additional courses are offered on the Internet, there will be a built in audience ready to enroll. Eventually many will finish a degree program by attending classes at either Wayne College or The University of Akron campuses. It is essential for educational institutions to have the ever-changing needs of their students be the driving force for policy, procedure and course offering modifications. Today's society requires customer-driven competition; students are the "customers" that create the market. Wayne College Computing Services has developed an infrastructure and personnel support for faculty who desire to use the World Wide Web to either enhance their courses by posting supplemental materials on the Internet, or by offering their entire course as a distance learning option. There is no difference between the academic content of the traditional version of the courses and the web based versions. Expected learning outcomes are the same for both web and classroom-based courses. Various web technologies will be utilized such as e-mail, discussion lists, threaded discussions, automated testing procedures, to mention a few.

We know from experience that many have had difficulty in scheduling, or may not be able to take a specific course during the desired semester. Distance education can accommodate many of the issues that may restrict someone from otherwise attending a traditional classroom and advancing their studies. Given that Wayne College Computing Services has developed the appropriate infrastructure and necessary personnel support, the course Internet: Physics for Environmental Technicians is proposed. Expected learning outcomes and objectives are established for this web-based course, as they would be for a traditionally delivered course. Various web technologies will be utilized such as web pages, JAVA scripts, e-mail, discussion lists, threaded discussions, and automated testing procedures to meet these objectives.
