The School of Communication is in the recently renovated Kolbe Hall in the heart of The University of Akron campus. Our office is in room 108. We would be glad to show you around and talk with you about the opportunities available to you as a communication major.

Areas of Study

We have undergraduate majors in:
  • Business and Organizational Communication --
    • Organizational Communication and Public Relations
  • Mass Media--
    • Media Production, News, Radio & TV
  • Interpersonal and Public Communication
We also offer a Masters program and minor degree opportunities in a wide verity of areas.

Coursework and Technology

We are developing our curriculum to integrate the new technologies available to us so we can better prepare our graduates for their careers. Many instructors incorporate the World Wide Web and the Internet into their courses in a variety of ways -- posting their syllabus, making lectures and presentations available, linking relevant sites to course readings and assignments and using the web in research. Instructors also use presentation software and multimedia in their instruction.

As well as using the technology, we are teaching the technology. Our students have the opportunity to learn desktop publishing and electronic media production. We have both PC and Macintosh computer labs for communication majors, and audio and video production suites, AVID digital video editors, and a TV teaching studio.

However, new technologies do not overshadow traditional communication studies. Students have the opportunity to study interpersonal communication, intercultural communication, nonverbal communication, rhetorical theory and public speaking. Periodically, special topics courses are offered such as leadership, political communication, communication and personality, and sports and entertainment public relations.

Outside the Classroom

Over one hundred students each year are involved in WZIP-FM 88.1, our student-operated radio station that is one of the top rated student operated radio stations in the United States.

There are co-curricular activities for students to further learn and apply their skills. These include PRSSA (Public Relations Student Society of America), The Association of Women in Communication, the Buchtelite student newspaper, and Forensics -- the speech and debate team.
