Thank you for your interest in the School of Communication's Master of Arts graduate program at the University of Akron. 


The School of Communication offers a flexible program of communication arts leading to the Master of Arts degree.  Many students continue their full time careers while completing their degree requirements.

 

Graduates of this program have continued their education to successfully complete the Ph.D. Graduates have also entered fields including Radio, Television, Newspapers, Magazines, Human Resources, Training and Development, and Public Relations.

Degree Requirements


The degree requires completion of 36 graduate credits:

  • 12 credits of core coursework,
  • 18 elective graduate credits (in areas of interest), and
  • 6 credits faculty-directed Thesis, Project, or Production

 

 

How To Apply

Requirements for admission consideration are:

1.      meet the general University's admission requirements for the Graduate School;

2.      have an undergraduate major in communication, journalism, or related field (If you do not have a major in communication or a related field, you will be admitted only upon completion of a program of undergraduate coursework determined by the faculty); and

3.      submit an essay of no more than 500 words detailing why you are interested in graduate study in communication at Akron.

Evaluation of student admission occurs on an ongoing basis.  Note, however, our School's guidelines require that applications for fall semester must be processed prior to May 1st

All material must be submitted directly to the graduate school along with your graduate school application.

Graduate Assistantships

Graduate assistantships for full-time students are available to qualified applicants.  To request an assistantship application for the School of Communication:

1.      complete the Application for Graduate Assistantship/Tuition Scholarship forms;

2.      attach a separate essay related to your special qualification for these types of financial aid;

3.      submit an essay of no more than 500 words detailing why you are interested in graduate study in communication at Akron;

4.      forward three letters of reference;

5.      provide a professional resume.

All material must be submitted directly to the graduate school along with your graduate school application.

Applied and Co-curricular Experience
Graduate students are able to obtain professional-quality applied communication experience in their areas of interest and expertise.

Students may join student organizations that provide contact and networking with professionals, such as the League of Black Communicators, Public Relations Student Society of America, The Association for Women in Communications. and the student chapter of The American Society for Training and Development.

Students may also have the opportunity to represent their school in the University's Graduate Student Government.
