WHP names women of year, plans award dinner March 3
The Women's History Project of the Akron Area recognized nine women for their contributions to preserving the national enviornment and reversing ecological destruction with Women of the Year awards.
The Women's History Project said these nine have shown exceptional vision and leadership in their attempts to save the planet.
The 2009 Women of the Year are:
Pioneer: Susan B. Allen of TC Architects;
Creativity: Playwright Jewelene Banks;
Courage: Civil Engineer Halle Jones Capers;
Perseverance: Elaine Marsh, co-founder of Friends of the Crooked River;
Inspiration: Alice Phillips, volunteer at Metro Parks serving Akron and Summit County;
Faith: Sr. Laura Wallace, OP, master gardener for Crown Point's Community Supported Agriculture program;
Innovation: Erika Weliczko of REpower Solutions;
Faye Dambrot Heroine Award: Christine D. Freitag, founder and president of Friends of Metro Parks;
Posthumous: Helen Yeszin, past president of NA'AMAT USA.
These women will be honored at the WHP Awards Dinner, March 3, at The University of Akron's Martin Center, 105 Fir Hill. Registration is at 5:30 p.m.; dinner at 6 p.m.Tickets are $50. UA Women in Philanthropy
to honor Kathleen Coleman

Women in Philanthropy at The University of Akron will honor Kathleen A. Coleman, long-time benefactor to the university, with the second annual Elizabeth Buchtel Award at the Women's History Project's Awards Dinner March 3.
Coleman has been responsible for the creation of Coleman Commons, an "outdoor living room" being built behind Buchtel Hall between the Student Union and the Student Recreation and Wellness Center. The Commons will eventually include a amphitheatre, labyrinth, and walks. Elizabeth Buchtel co-founded The University of Akron (then Buchtel College) with her husband.
