This
website is the creation of the Spring 2003 Website Development Class
offered by the School of Communication at The University of Akron. This
class was offered through the Mass Media Area (News concentration) and
was taught by Kathleen Endres. Students enrolled in this class were
advanced undergraduate News majors and graduate students.
Students
worked with a list of some 400 women from Akron who, by virtue of the
job they held, business they ran or volunteer organization that they
were involved with, made important contributions to city, regional,
state or national life. That list was developed from an examination
of primary and secondary materials relating to Akron.
Students
used primary and secondary materials (for a complete bibliography, click
here) to prepare the biographical essays provided in this website
and the historical materials that appear in the kid's website. Additional
materials on other women will be added later to this website.
This
website was designed by Joshua
Surgeon, a graduate student in the School of Communication. Writers
and researchers were: Angela Abel, Janelle
Baltputnis, Stephanie Devers, Nicholas
DiGennaro, Penny Fox, Zachary
Jackson, Gina Monroe, Casey
Moore, and Jennifer Petric.
Students
also developed the related publicity and promotional materials associated
with this website.
We're
pleased to announce that this website has won a number of awards. To
