The Adventure Plus department of Child and Adolescent Service Center (C.A.S.C.) runs adventure therapy groups as well as therapeutic Day and Resident Camps.  Adventure therapy is a combination of experiential education and group therapy.  Children in these groups participate in activities, projects, challenges, and processing related to their individual therapeutic goals and goals related to social functioning.  An integral part of this program is the Mentors which help the therapist and facilitator of the groups and camps.  Mentors are typically college undergrads who have an interest in a career working with children in the mental health/education profession.  We offer them a “sneak preview” into the profession as they would work with an experienced therapist and facilitator in a group therapy setting.  Mentor responsibilities include:

      • Transporting children to and from their group.  This is an important aspect of the program as many of the children’s group experience starts and ends with transportation.  This will give the mentors an opportunity to talk with the children, help them to problem solve, and help them to review what they had just learned in their group.
      • During the groups, Mentors interact with group members providing positive role modeling and coaching on appropriate behaviors with other children and adults.
      • Mentors also participate in the activities during groups encouraging children to participate, offering them positive reinforcement, and again, providing positive modeling to help children develop healthy peer and adult interactions.
      • Additionally, all Mentors receive on the job training to promote learning while doing.
      • Typical pay is between $6.50 to $7.50 per hour, depending upon experience
