UA SHRM is proud to offer a series of interesting and informative speakers for both students and faculty throughout the academic year.

Our members and officers are working hard to provide the professional content, exposure to issues, and contacts that give our students the edge with employers in a competitive job marketplace.  Please plan to join us at these events to compliment your academic experience and begin the transition toward employment or graduate studies. 

The Speaker Series is open to all interested students (regardless of major) or faculty members attending The University of Akron.

UA SHRM Speaker Series presents Michael Hamula, Assistant VP for FirstMerit Bank. 

Michael shared his strong belief, and nearly two years of supportive findings, in the benefits of his recently implemented policies for recruiting through employee referrals, research of competitor ranks, resume/application data mining, and other non-traditional tactics to improve the quality of new employees.

Michael generously shared his own thoughts and programs believed to assist his local company to compete more effectively in a highly competitive industry.  Many HR students, faculty and guests were in attendance.

"Selection"

UA SHRM Speaker Series presents Christine Scheu from the Detroit office of Aon Consulting, a successful international Human Capital Consulting firm based in Chicago.  Ms. Scheu discussed recent trends in, and the growing importance of,  "Selection"  with students and faculty.  She has been working extensively with businesses as a consultant in the field of IO Psychology. 

Ms. Scheu's presentation included an introduction about her employer, Aon Consulting, and the important role they have in Human Capital and Management projects for clients around the world.  She reviewed an ongoing project for a client interested in developing an effective selection process for both US employees, and an increasingly large global work-force in many different parts of the world. She discussed the process, challenges, and aspects of successfully developing a process that is both effective in many different employment cultures and attitudes around the globe, and compliant with the US legal requirements and corporate policies for HR related issues.

Ms. Scheu provided great insight into this area of Human Resources and generously answered many questions from the audience related to the field.  Everyone present benefited from her unique, personal insights into the varying employment environments for HR students in both large and medium sized HR Consulting firms.

"HR Perspective on Interviews and Interviewing"

UA SHRM Speaker Series presents Melisse Boyd of PPC Consulting.  Ms. Boyd discussed the steps a candidate should take to prepare for an interview, as well as the attributes of an ideal candidate during the interviewing process.

The HR/employer perspective illuminated many pitfalls, as well as opportunities for job applicants during the critical interview phase. 

Her presentation included the perspectives of the HR(candidate screening), the hiring manager, and the job candidate.  It was very illuminating to relate the entire process from such a broad perspective.  Thank you Melisse!

"J.D./MS Graduate Program in HR

UA SHRM Speaker Series presents James Divoky, Assistant Dean and Director of Graduate Programs in Business speaking on the topic of graduate studies for CBA students. 

Dr. Divoky discussed the program requirements and selection criteria for the Masters of Business Administration (MBA) and the Masters of Science in Management (MSA).  Also covered, was a new offering for students wishing a specialization in HR Law.  The program enables graduate students to replace some of their required classes with related HR Law classes in the university's Law School.
