Shane Claiborne, a former student of Dr. Tony Campolo, graduated from Eastern University and did graduate work at Princeton Theological Seminary and is now a part of the Alternative Seminary in Philadelphia. He ministered alongside Mother Teresa in Calcutta for almost three months and spent a year internship with mega-church Willow Creek Community Church outside Chicago. He also spent three weeks in Baghdad with the Iraq Peace Team, a project of Voices in the Wilderness and Christian Peacemaker Teams, taking daily trips to sites where there had been bombings, visiting hospitals and families, and attending worship services during the war.
Claiborne is a founding member of The Simple Way faith community which emphasizes thoughtful and contemplative prayer, communal life, and practical engagement with the poor. He serves on the Board of Directors for The Christian Community Development Association, and he is featured in the documentary The Ordinary Radicals. He is also the author of The Irresistible Revolution and co-author of Jesus for President: Politics for Ordinary Radicals with Chris Haw as well as Becoming the Answer to Our Prayers: Prayer for Ordinary Radicals. He began a speaking tour for Jesus for President in July 2008.
Claiborne describing his ministry: “When we have new eyes we can look into the faces of those we don’t even like, and see the One we love. We can see God’s image in everyone we encounter…And that is when we are free to imagine a revolution that sets both the oppressed and the oppressors free. The world is starving for grace. And grace is hard to communicate with a noose.”
