Welcome and thank you for your interest in the Sociology Department of the University of Akron.  Our department’s mission is to produce and disseminate sociological knowledge. For our graduate students this goal is accomplished through the acquisition of research and teaching skills, timely completion of the degree, and, for doctoral students, the production of an independent, original dissertation.

A benefit of the graduate program at the University of Akron is that it is part of a joint program with Kent State University.  Students enter into the program through either department.  Administratively students have a “home” department but also have access to faculty and resources in both departments.  Our graduate students take courses at both universities and faculty on both campuses serve on student committees. The program is devised in such a way that students at both campuses are meeting all major degree requirements identically.  In addition, the combined resources from both universities afford students access to state of the art computer labs, an experimental lab, a qualitative research methods lab, a survey research lab, and student office space.

We hope the information offered here is helpful to you as you explore the Department of Sociology and the University of Akron.
