Barbara Sykes
Deputy Auditor
of Administration
Since
1989, Mrs. Sykes has served as the Deputy Auditor of Administration for Summit
County. In this capacity she manages the
personnel, purchasing, and business services for the Summit County Auditor’s
office.
As
a result of her victory in the Primary Election, Mrs. Sykes will be the
Democratic Nominee to represent the 44th House District in the 2000
General Election. Mrs. Sykes is no
stranger to the rigors of successful campaigning. She was the Democratic Nominee for State Treasurer in 1994 and
served as the Ohio Political Director for the 1992 Clinton-Gore Campaign.
Mrs.
Sykes was the first woman of color to be elected to Akron City Council, serving
first as the 3rd Ward Councilwoman serving from 1983 to 1987, and
then Councilwoman-At-Large, serving from 1987 to 1989. While serving as a member of Akron City
Council, Mrs. Sykes was a strong advocate for the rights of citizens who are
often overlooked. She was proud to
sponsor the first legislation in Akron’s history that established preferences
for minority businesses. She has also
served as the Director of Police Community Dialogue, an agency that provides
leadership in fostering positive relationships between police officers and the
Akron community.
Mrs. Sykes earned her Bachelors of Social Work and a Master of Public Administration from the University of Akron. Mrs. Sykes and her husband, Representative Sykes, are the proud parents of two daughters, Stancy and Emilia.
