An Introduction to the Scribing Sounds Exhibit

A listing of the scores and composers from the Exhibit

The Scribing Sounds Exhibit is a collection of 65 Scores exemplifying non traditional music notation. Many of these scores are in fact fascinating works of visual art in their own right. The purpose of the exhibit is to demonstrate new ideas in music notation and music notation as an art form. The Scribing Sounds Collection was curtated by Sylvia Smith and has been exhibited throughout the United States and Europe.
Each of the scores from the exhibit and their descriptive panels are in the archive. The archive contains articles by Sylvia Smith on the subject of non traditional music notation and music notation as visual art. Correspondence with Smith Publications regarding the Scribing Sounds Exhibit, Scribing Sounds Exhibit 2 and the Eye Music Exhibit and a slide show version of the Scribing Sounds Exhibit are also part of the Archive.

Invented Instruments

One of the interesting trends of New music of the 20th century is the exploration of new timbral resources. This exploration has led to the use of electronic sounds and unusual methods of playing conventional instruments. Some composers have gone so far as to create or invent instruments to achieve new sonorities.
At present there are three invented instruments in the archive: Composer Robert Erickson's "stroking rods", composer/performer Dan Senn's "Sound Sculpture" (Scraper percussion) and composer William Woods' "microtonal chimes". In addition there is further information about Robert Erickson's and Dan Senns' experimentation with creating new instruments.
