Zips Run Well at Golden Flash Gala

Although the size of the group competing was small the performances were big at the Golden Flash Gala. Emily Freudenrich placed second in the women's 800m (2:17.19) running more than two seconds faster than last year. She then came back to anchor the second-place 4x 400m relay. Also running on that relay was Jennie Castle whose 57.1-second split was the fastest Akron split of the day. Brandi Schoeppner made her debut in the 5,000m placing fifth in a time of 18:08.83. Her splits were 5:53, 5:53, 5:43, and 37. Also placing fifth in a debut effort was Amy Hutchison in the 800m (2:27.09).

Cross Country Award Winners Announced

Adriana Zalucka and David Howard were recognized as the Most Valuable Runners at the 2003 Cross Country Awards Banquet. Zalucka earned All MAC and All Ohio recognition and was Akron's top finisher in every race she competed in. Howard led the Zips at the Great Lakes Regional Championships, the MAC Championships, the Toledo Invitational, and the Tommy Evans Invitational. The Most Improved Awards went to Brandi Schoeppner and David Pykare. Rachel Zubricky and Scott Mate were chosen the Newcomers of the Year. Finally, Morgan Sulzener (All MAC, All Ohio, and Tommy Evans Invitational individual champion) received the Coaches Award.
