September 10, 2003 Zip Women Triumph at Tommy Evans Invitational For the fourth time in the last five years the Akron women's cross country team was victorious at the Tommy Evans Invitational defeating Buffalo, Kent State, and Cleveland State. The Zips put five runners in the top 10, led by individual champion Morgan Sulzener. Sulzener covered the tough 5km course in 18:13. That ranks as the second-fastest time ever turned in on the Indigo Lake course behind former Akron star Bobbie Hardbarger's 17:57. For her efforts Sulzener was recognized by the Mid-American Conference as its female Runner of the Week. Behind Sulzener Jennie Castle (3rd, 18:36) and Brandi Schoeppner (6th, 18:59) also broke 19:00. Akron's men placed third behind Kent State and Buffalo. David Howard continued his impressive recovery from knee surgery by placing eighth. Joining Howard in the top 10 was David Pykare. The Akron women will compete this Saturday at the Miami Invitational against conference rivals Ball State, Buffalo, Miami, as well as the University of Michigan.
