Zips Sweep Distance Events to Win Akron Quad

The University of Akron opened the 2006 indoor season in strong fashion, winning the 800m, mile and 3000m races, to help the women's team to a convincing win in the Akron Quad. The Zips tallied 176 points followed by Pittsburgh (139), Ohio (78) and Seton Hall (75).

Rachel Zubricky got the ball rolling with a come-from-behind win in the mile. She closed her 5:02.37 performance with a 68.8 last 400m. In the 800m, Jennie Castle broke her own fieldhouse record with a time of 2:09.29. She currently has the second-fastest time among Division I women. Also, Emily Freudenrich placed second running 2:14.97. Finally, Brandi Schoeppner (10:10.53) and Morgan Sulzener (10:12.27) went 1-2 in the women's 3000m.

"I was very pleased with the way we competed today" said distance coach Scott Jones. "We scored 46 of a possible 48 points and virtually everyone put themselves in a position to be successful in their race. I thought we could run faster, and I know in the future we will run much faster, but the fast times will be a by-product of racing competitively. That's what we work towards with our physical and mental preparation and that's why I was so happy to see us demonstrate a strong competitive instinct tonight."
