Zips Capture MAC Indoor Title

Akron, known to some as Ak-Rowdy, lived up to that billing with its loud and excited fans, helping lead the Zips to their second consecutive Mid-American Conference indoor track championship this weekend at the Perry Field house. — BGNews

Beata Rudzinska won her fourth MAC Indoor 800m title and her distance teammates scored in every event they were entered in to help the Akron women to their second consecutive indoor championship.

On Friday, the 5000m duo of Brandi Schoeppner (5th, 17:16.20) and Morgan Sulzener (7th, 17:28.13) and the distance medley relay team of Jennie Castle, Alex Jordan, Emily Freudenrich and Rachel Zubricky (2nd, 11:50.16) helped the Zips to a precarious half-point lead over Ball State at the end of the first day.

On Saturday, the team battle see-sawed back and forth until Rudzinska, Castle (3rd, 2:12.63) and Emily Freudenrich (7th, 2:15.05) combined to score 18 points in the 800m and give Akron the lead for good. However, the title was in doubt until the 3000m when Schoeppner (3rd, 9:49.84), Sulzener (7th, 10:01.02) and Adriana Zalucka (8th, 10:01.60) clinched the Akron victory.

Earlier on Saturday, Zubricky (3rd, 4:55.80) led Castle (5th, 4:57.35) and Becki Michael (6th, 4:58.76) in the mile.
