Women MAC Champs!
Two years removed from a last-place finish, the Akron women's
track & field team enjoyed its finest moment capturing the
Mid-American Conference championship. The Zips, who scored 121
points, endured a tight battle with runner-up Eastern Michigan
(117) and third-place finisher Kent (115).
Heptathlon winner Christi Smith, the meet's Most Valuable Performer,
also placed fourth in the javelin, long jump, and the triple jump
for a total of 26 points. Freshman Mary Varga added 20 points
with a second-place finish in the high jump and third-place finishes
in the heptathlon and javelin. In the sprints, Jasmine Reynolds
and LaTrese Taylor placed 2nd and 5th in the 100m and 3rd and
6th in the 200m.
Statistically the meet was a phenomenal success for the Zips.
Akron scored in 14 of the 21 events, achieved 6 NCAA qualifying
marks, and broke 8 school records.

Men Move into Upper Division
Coming into the men's competition the Zips were forecast by the
MAC coaches to place 8th, but a strong showing in the sprints
and relays and a win in the decathlon elevated Akron to a 6th-place
finish. LeShaunte Edwards and Chad Bullett swapped second and
third place in the 100m and the 200m and ran on the victorious
4x 100m relay. LeShaunte's 10.23 in the 100m is a new school record,
as is Chad's 200 time of 20.58. In both events LeShaunte and Chad
met the NCAA provisional qualifying standard and look likely to
be competing in the NCAA Championships in Boise, ID.
In the opening event of the meet, Mike Slomovitz won the decathlon
competition in a school record and NCAA provisional score of 7233
points.
Mickey Andrade placed 3rd in the steeplechase and contributed
6 points to the team score.
