LATRESE TAYLOR

Taylor Sprinting to victory in the 200 meters at Kent

Latrese Taylor of Canton McKinley HS was named this week's Athlete of the Week for her performance and efforts at the Kent Open over the weekend. At this event Taylor won both the 55 meter and the 200 meter dashes. She ran a provisional NCAA mark of 6.94 in the short race. Last year that time was good enough to qualify for the NCAA Championships. Taylor has been battling injuries over the last two years, but always coming through impressively at MAC Championship events. On a couple of occasions she has finished as high as second in the MAC to 1999 200m NCAA champion LaTasha Jenkins of Ball State. Last year she was a member of the MAC 4 x 100 championship team.

Jamie Johnson taking the stick into the lead in 99 MAC 4x100 relay

This week's honor goes to Jamie Johnson (Jr) from Glenville High School. Jamie has scored in every conference meet since joining the program in Fall 97. He was a member of the conference championship 4 x 100 relay team which went 39.95. This same team was in the finals at Texas Relays and Penn Relays. Jamie earned this week's distinction because of his dedication and success during Fall training. His practice sprint times have gone down considerably, his weights have gone up, as he has also seen marked improvements in the classroom.

Jim DeMarco (so) from Green High School was this week's athlete of the week. Last year Jim was the runner up at the MAC indoor championships. At the outdoor championships he met with some disappointment not scoring. As a result, Jim has dedicated himself fully. He trained hard over the summer never missing an all-comers meet, or an opportunity to lift. His strength levels and technique have improved significantly improving over the year by 40 lbs in the bench, 50lbs in the cleans, and 70lbs in the squat. He has been an excellent example of hard work and how you should act when you meet adversity.
