Mary Varga and Frank Stupczy

After their personal record performances at the All-Ohio Championships combined athletes Frank Stupczy (Jr) and Mary Varga (Jr) were named this week's male and female track athletes of the week. Mary Varga obtained four personal records on the day. She long jumped 18'10", hurdled a time of 9.30, ran a 800 leg on the DMR in 2:31, and had a personal indoor record in the high jump at 5'11". Her high jump mark is an NCAA provisional mark. Mary also threw the shot put.

Frank had two personal records in the hurdles. In the prelims he went 8.42 and in the finals 8.27. Frank is a strong dedicated member of the team putting in tremendous hours training for the decathlon.

This last week the Zips competed at the Golden Flash Open at Kent State, Feb. 3. Akron used most of this meet as a good training competitive opportunity by having many of the athletes do several different events. In one of her primary events, the 60, Lucretia Corbin improved significantly running a best of 7.66. She also ran the 400 and the 4 x 400. In the 4 x 400 she helped the women to their best time of the year. Her performance earned her "Track Athlete of the Week" honors.

For the men a special salute needs to go out to those who men who came through with personal records and tough performances.

Lisa Clark (Sr.) LeShaunte Edwards (Sr.)

Lisa Clark and LeShaunte Edwards were named this week's "Athletes of the Week" because of their performances at the Penn State National Open meet January 26-27. There were nearly 50 schools represented at this meet. Lisa Clark in her first 400 of the season dominated her race running all alone in the front from the gun going 56.37. This was a new school record. LeShaunte Edwards went 21.08 in his 200 for a school record, but his big race was in the 60. In the finals of the 60 there was an outstanding field of sprinters. All have or were capable of running national level time. Edwards powered out of the blocks for an impressive victory tying the school record in 6.67. Both his 60 and 200 times are significant provisional NCAA qualifying marks.
