Athletes of the Week 2001 5/08/01 Jeanine Thomas and Jason Flowers

Both Jeanine Thomas (jr) and Jason Flowers (jr) made come backs this last weekend at the Penn State Quad after overcoming injuries. Jason shot his time down to 1:53.75. His previous best this year was 1:56. He also ran a tough anchor leg in the 4 x 400 relay. Jeanine showed she had the right stuff after provisionally qualifying in the pole vault skying 12'5.5" to win the competition. Jeanine has been overcoming a ankle sprain most of the year compounded by a recent severe heel bruise after missing the pit a few weeks ago in practice. Flowers has been having troubles with stress fractures the last few years. His last one kept him out of this year's indoor season and he still spends much of his training on a bike.

5/1/01 Jaime Alton and Devin Booker

Jamie Alton (jr) and Devin Booker (Fr) were chosen this week's track "Athletes of the Week" for their performances at the Baldwin Wallcae Invite April 28. Both of them had significant personal best. Alton brought her time down in the steeple chase from 11:47.42 to 11:16.48. Booker went from a best of 15.03 to 14.70 electronic.

At the 2001 Sea Ray Relays April 14 the women's sprint medley relay of Lucretia Corbin, Erica Burks, Lisa Clark and Bobbie Hardbarger ran a school record time of 3:56.85. Corbin ran the first 200 leg, followed by Burks for the second 200. Clark ran the third leg, the 400, with a low 55 second split, putting the Zips into the lead. Clark then handed off to Hardbarger who ran 2:11.5 split. The old school record time was 3:58.34. This is the third year in a row that the Zips ran a school record in this event at the Sea Ray Relays.

 

4/10/01

Jim DeMarco and Gigi Dostal

The Zips were split up this last week at two meets. Texas Relays and the Kent Ice Breaker Meet. At the Ice Breaker Open, Gigi Dostal recorded an impressive win in the 3000 kicking down her competitors to a win. In scorching temperatures her time was 10:30.92. This was Gigi's second win in a row after being victorious the week before in the 1500 at Akron.

Jim Demarco took advantage of a fourth attempt at Texas Relays in route to breaking the school record in the pole vault. In the middle of his third attempt at the opening bar of 15'11" the wind blew down the bar. Getting to jump over again DeMarco took of the opportunity clearing the bar and the next two heights on his third attempt. He cleared 16'4 3/4" and then 16'10 3/4" for the school record. His performance at Texas earned him UA Athlete of the Week as well as the track honors.

Bobbie Hardbarger and Ryan Scullen

After their performances at the Akron Quad Meet March 31 Bobbie Hardbarger and Kevin Poest were named Zip female and male track "Athletes of the Week". Bobbie Hardbarger hit a provisional mark of of 11:09.75 for the inaugural 3000 steeple chase for women. Along with winning the steeple chase she came back to win the 800 as well. Her 800 time was 2:18.80. Hardbarger not only earned track athlete of the week honors but was named UA Athlete of the Week.

Ryan Scullen ran to a big improvement in the 400 running 49.75. He did this at the Akron Quad Meet March 31, 2001. He improved by almost a second over his previous personal record 50.86.

3/27/01

Mary Varga and Greg Corbitt

After impressive performances at the 2001 Alabama Relays Greg Corbitt (so) and Mary Varga (sr) were named Track Athletes of the Week. Corbitt broke his personal record in the hammer throw by 13 feet going 178'10". He threw this on his first throw in the competition.

Varga won three events the heptathlon, high jump and javelin throw. Her javelin throw was a NCAA provisional mark of 153-7 and a new UA school record. She had four throws at Alabama Relays, during the heptathlon and open javelin, over her old school record of 150-1. Her performance in the heptathlon was also a provisional NCAA mark at 5375.
