Zips Race Well at Penn State

 

Morgan Sulzener led the women's team to an 8th-place finish at the Penn State National Invitational, while David Howard rebounded from All Ohio to lead the men. Beata Rudzinska, making her cross country debut, Jennie Castle, and Brandi Schoeppner all crossed the finish line within 19 seconds of Sulzener. The men's team spread from 1-6 was 53 seconds.

Sulzener Named MAC Cross Country Runner of the Week

 

Morgan Sulzener was the top MAC finisher at the competitive Notre Dame Invitational, running a lifetime best for cross country, 17:39, to earn this week's MAC Cross Country Runner of the Week. Sulzener is the first Akron runner to receive this recognition in the 2004 season. It is the second time in her career she has been honored by the conference office as its Runner of the Week.

The men's cross country team followed up its victory in the Tommy Evans Invitational with a strong second-place finish at the Central Collegiate Championships behind MAC pre-season favorite Central Michigan. The women, behind Morgan Sulzener's and Jennie Castle's top-ten finishes captured third.

36th Tommy Evans Invitational Opens Cross Country Season Saturday

The men's and women's cross country teams will compete in their only home meet, the Tommy Evans Invitational this Saturday at Firestone Metro Park. The men's 4-mile race starts at 11:30 am. The women's 5-kilometer race gets underway at 12:15 pm. More

Women's Team and Six Individuals Recognized for All Academic Honors

The Akron women's track & field team received recognition as an All Academic Team by virtue of the team's cumulative 3.14 grade point average. Jenny Castle (800m), Emily Freudenrich (800m), Ashley Kaufman (javelin), and Lisa Ravn (high jump), from the women's team, and Randall Hafner (shot put) and Kevin Poest, from the men's team, were also honored as All Academic individuals. To qualify individuals had to post a 3.25 cumulative grade-point average and meet the regional qualifying standard for outdoor track.

2004 Cross Country Schedule Announced

The University of Akron cross country teams will host its home meet, the 36th-annual Tommy Evans Invitational, on September 11. The Lake Marie Relays will be the teams' season opener and will take place the weekend prior to Tommy Evans. The teams will also travel to Toledo for the Central Collegiate Championships on September 18 and the MAC Championships on October 30, Notre Dame (October 1), the All Ohio Championships (October 8), and Penn State (October 16). 13 Zips Travel to NCAA Mideast Regional Championships

Seven women and six men travel to Baton Rouge, Louisiana to compete in the NCAA Mideast Regional Championships this Friday and Saturday. Headlining the Akron performers is Kira Sims who is the top seed in the women's pole vault with a mark of 14' 1.25". Ashley Kaufman enters the javelin competition with the seventh-best mark. Three women, Beata Rudzinska, Jennie Castle and Emily Freudenrich, will compete in the 800m. Two freshman high jumpers, Natalie Sako and Lisa Ravn, round out the Zips' women contingent.

For the men, indoor All-American John Russell will jump in a tough men's pole vault competition as the third seed. Greg Corbitt will throw both the shot, where he is ranked 10th, and the hammer. Also competing in the hammer are Dustin Shaffer and Zach Helm. Shaffer will also be in the discus throw. Zach Helm joins Corbitt in the shot put. Sprinter Jamie Goodwin will run the 200m.

Russell & Sims Earn Most Outstanding Performer Recognition at MAC Indoor Championships

John Russell (video) and Kira Sims (video) won their pole vault competitions in record-setting fashion to highlight Akron's efforts at the MAC Indoor Championships. Russell took the men's competition with a 17' 10.5" jump breaking his school record and setting a new MAC meet and all-time mark, as did Sims with her 14' winning jump in the women's vault.

Kira Sims Named MAC Athlete of the Week

For the second week in a row an Akron pole vaulter was recognized by the Mid-American Conference as its track & field athlete of the week. Last week John Russell won that recognition. This week Kira Sims, by virtue of her record-setting performance at the EMU Invitational, received that award from the MAC office.

Kira Sims Breaks Bowen Fieldhouse Record in Pole Vault at EMU Invitational

Competing at the site of this year's MAC Indoor Championships, Kira Sims broke the Bowen Fieldhouse record and provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships. The winning jump, listed in the results as 12' 11.75", is also a season's best for Sims. In the men's vault competition Kevin Poest placed first with a leap of 16' 6".

Jenna Strouse captured the women's shot put title, her first, with a 42' 9.75" throw. Dustin Shaffer just missed the provisional qualifying standard in the men's weight throw with his 63' 7" toss.

Satara Freeman, running in her second meet, finished second in the women's 60m hurdles running 8.98 seconds. Lisa Ravn was also a second-place finisher. She competed in the women's high jump (5' 5.75").

John Russell Named MAC Athlete of the Week

Competing at the Pole Vault Summit in Reno, Nevada, John Russell cleared 17' 4.75" to tie for first place in the first flight of the College Men's competition. That performance earned Russell this week's MAC Athlete of the Week honor. Last year Russell was an All American in the indoor pole vault and was named The University of Akron's Male Athlete of the Year.
