Smialek Crowned Penn Relays High Jump Champion

Tomasz Smialek won the college championship high jump at the Penn Relays Saturday with a 7' 1/2" clearance. Smialek bested Dusty Jonas of Nebraska, who was the runner-up in the 2005 NCAA Indoor Championships, and Andra Manson of Texas, who was third in that event. Smialek and the rest of the Zips will be back in action in the season's final home meet, the Campbell/Wright Open. The hammer throw and developmental pole vault will be held on Friday afternoon at 4:00 pm. Saturday's events commence at 2:00 pm. The Campbell/Wright Open will be the final home track competition for seniors Chris Bennett, Devin Booker, Adam Bray, Jon Morgan, Lindsay Feiten, and Beata Rudzinska.

Zips Sweep All Ohio Titles

The Akron track teams took home both team titles at the All Ohio Championships. The women tallied 197 points to easily eclipse runnerup Ohio State's total of 126, while the men scored 168 points to hold off second-place Cincinnati with 157. The Zips captured 14 events and came home with 9 regional qualifying marks. In addition school records were broken in the women's 400m (Brittany Hocker, 54.22), women's discus (Liz Mangen, 158' 1"), and the women's 4x 100m relay (Tamala Perryman, Deanna Caldwell, Corine Gavin-Hall, Brittany Hocker, 45.47)

Jennie Castle Named MAC Scholar-Athlete of the Week Too!

Senior Jennie Castle received more accolades from the Mid-American Conference office as she was named this week's female Scholar Athlete. Scholar Athlete recognition is awarded by the conference schools' faculty athletics representatives. Recipients must have a grade point average of 3.00 or better and have performed well athletically that week. Castle, a mass-media communication major, carries a 3.76 GPA. She ran conference-leading marks of 2:06.91 (800m) and 4:23.26 at the Duke Invitational.

Jennie Castle Named MAC Track Athlete of the Week

Winning the 800m race at the Duke Invitational in a personal best and regional qualifying time of 2:06.91 and running a 4:23.26 1500m (also a PR and regional qualifying time) earned Jennie Castle the MAC's female Track Athlete of the Week honor.

In addition, Castle joins teammate Beata Rudzinska on Trackwire's "Dandy Dozen" listing of projected impact athletes at the NCAA Championships. Rudzinska is ranked third and Castle tenth on the 800m list. Akron is the only school in the country to have two athletes ranked in the women's 800m. Tomasz Smialek is ranked tenth in the men's high jump (www.trackwire.com).

Rudzinska, Sako, Smialek Named to Indoor All American Team

Beata Rudzinska (800m - 3rd, 2:04.12), Natalie Sako (HJ - 10th, 5' 9.25") and Tomasz Smialek (HJ - 6th, 7' 2.5") were all named All Americans on the basis of their performances at the NCAA Indoor Championships in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Rudzinska is now a three-time indoor All American. In 2003 she placed 5th in the 800m and in 2004 she improved to 4th in that event. Sako and Smialek earned their All American recognition in the first appearance in an NCAA Championship.

Morgan Sulzener Qualifies for NCAA Cross Country Championships

Morgan Sulzener raced to a 12th-place finish at the Great Lakes Regional Championships to earn a berth in the field of the NCAA Cross Country Championships in Terre Haute, Indiana on Monday, November 22. Sulzener, a junior, becomes the fourth Akron woman to qualify for the national championships. Judy Ervin was the first Zip to achieve this feat in 1992. Michelle Rizzo was a cross country All American based on her finish at the 1999 NCAA Championships. Adriana Zalucka placed 49th in the 2002 meet, also held in Terre Haute. Sulzener is a two-time All MAC cross country honoree. More

Zips Travel to Toledo for MAC Championships

 

The Akron cross country teams will compete in the MAC Championships hosted by the University of Toledo this Saturday at the OttawaPark Golf Course. The men's 8-kilometer race starts at 11:00 am and is followed by the women's 5-kilometer race at noon. The men's team was picked to finish sixth in the pre-season MAC coaches' poll after placing ninth in 2003. The women were picked second, one place ahead of their third-place finish in 2003. In 1999 the Akron women won their only MAC cross country championship behind Michelle Rizzo's individual title.

Zips Race Well at Penn State

 

Morgan Sulzener led the women's team to an 8th-place finish at the Penn State National Invitational, while David Howard rebounded from All Ohio to lead the men. Beata Rudzinska, making her cross country debut, Jennie Castle, and Brandi Schoeppner all crossed the finish line within 19 seconds of Sulzener. The men's team spread from 1-6 was 53 seconds.

Sulzener Named MAC Cross Country Runner of the Week

 

Morgan Sulzener was the top MAC finisher at the competitive Notre Dame Invitational, running a lifetime best for cross country, 17:39, to earn this week's MAC Cross Country Runner of the Week. Sulzener is the first Akron runner to receive this recognition in the 2004 season. It is the second time in her career she has been honored by the conference office as its Runner of the Week.

The men's cross country team followed up its victory in the Tommy Evans Invitational with a strong second-place finish at the Central Collegiate Championships behind MAC pre-season favorite Central Michigan. The women, behind Morgan Sulzener's and Jennie Castle's top-ten finishes captured third.
