Lavalley Breaks School Record in Weight Throw

Freshman Amy Lavalley made her Akron throwing debut a memorable one setting a new school record in the 20-pound weight throw, breaking teammate Liz Mangen's record, with a throw of 55' 3.5".

Akron competitors dominated the men's decathlon. Senior Justin Southall won the competition, sophomore Mike Yankie placed third, and freshman Mike Wagner finished fourth.

Dustin Shaffer was the top collegiate competitor in the men's 35-pound weight throw with a 61' 2.75" toss. Shaffer placed second in that event at last year's MAC Indoor Championships.

John Russell(17' 0.75") and Kevin Poest (16' 6.75") went 1-2 in the men's pole vault, as did the freshman high jump duo of Lisa Ravn and Natalie Sako, both clearing 5' 6".

Other second-place finishes were recorded by Emily Freudenrich in the women's 800m (2:17.91), the women's 4x 400m relay team of Deanna Caldwell, Jennie Castle, Carol Holmes, and Freudenrich (3:55.34), Kira Sims in the pole vault (12' 5.5"), Jenna Strouse in the shot put (44' 0"), For the men, Devin Booker was second in the 60m high hurdles (8.21), the 4x 400m relay team of Jon Morgan, Mike Meditz, Matt Cleveland, and Howard Harris also finished second.
