TURKISH MOVIE NIGHT

Pronounce
the title of this observant comedy a few times and you’ll realize
what it means: “television,” a new marvel planned to be installed in a small,
insular village in southeastern Turkey
in 1974 by state officials. Townsfolk
react with fear, wonder and anticipation; the owner
of the area’s lone cinema sees his audience (and community stature)
fall like, well, bad ratings. For
traditionalists TV represents the devil, while
entrepreneurs look to it as a business opportunity. However, for the
town’s repairman, “Crazy Emin,”
the question is how to get the thing to work? (In Turkish with English
subtitles, 105 min.)
