| Originally published in
1994, An Illustrated History of
American Psychology describes in words and illustrates with
pictures many of the highlights of psychology's recent past. The
text broadly organizes modern American psychology in three traditional
epochs: its founding, its development, and its maturity.
Drawing from the rich resources of the Archives of
the History
of American Psychology at The University of Akron, archives at
other universities, and commercial companies, Popplestone and
McPherson include informal documents, historic laboratory equipment,
older tests, and even frames from early films. Some illustrations
show material directly related to the text, and some help to evoke
a period or just delight and astonish.
"It is not easy to achieve a pacesetter, but that
is what An
Illustrated History of American Psychology undoubtedly is.
Assembled by the two indisputable experts in memorabilia of North
American psychology, John A. Popplestone's and Marion White McPherson's
volume is first and foremost a photographic collection of artifacts,
individuals, events and occasions relating to the history of the
century spanning 1875 to 1975. As such, it will be an absolute treasure
chest to any historian of psychology."
