Administrative History:

The American Association of University Women (AAUW) noted its 100th anniversary in January 1982 (the Akron Branch was 56 years old). The AAUW is the largest and oldest national organization for women with more than 190,000 members in the United States, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and Guam. It was founded in Boston by 65 women college graduates.

The purpose and goals of the AAUW are:

  1. To present the viewpoint of educated women to other organizations, institutions, and government agencies whose concerns relate to the AAUW program; and strive for greater use of qualified women in policy-making positions.
  2. To encourage high standards of education for women through the approval of institutions whosegraduates thus become eligible for membership.
  3. To develop a study-action program in education, international relations, social and economic issues, status of women, mass media and the arts.
  4. To support a Legislative Program, voted by the Association in convention; inform branches regarding the progress of legislation within the scope of the Association program.
  5. To aid women scholars by awarding graduate fellowships and grants to both American and those of other countries.

The Akron Branch AAUW operates under the by-laws of the national Association and state Division. The conduct two types of monthly meetings: (1) Board meetings, which are attended by elected officers, committee chairmen, branch members serving on state or national levels, retired presidents, and other appointees, for the purpose of generating plans (in the form of recommendations) to be presented at Branch meetings for approval. (2) Branch meetings are open to all AAUW members. At these meetings, the Board's recommendations are presented and the Branch accepts or rejects them. In addition, various committee reports and announcements are made and old and new business is discussed.

The Akron Branch AAUW also distributes a monthly bulletin (the Acorn) to its members which announces activities (when and where they will take place), new members and other items of interest to its members.

Scope and Content:

This collection includes notebooks containing Branch and Board Meeting Minutes as well as Miscellaneous aterials. The miscellaneous materials include such items as correspondence, AAUW bulletins (Acorn), committee/financial reports, by-laws, policy sheets, committee/board member listings, questionnaires and an AAUW constitution. These materials might be useful for a behind-the-scenes look at AAUW activities both in the Akron area and on the national level.

The scrapbook (1979-1981) contains mostly newspaper clippings which represent AAUW activities almost as well as meeting minutes might have. Clippings from sources other than newspapers are also included as well as many of the miscellaneous items mentioned above.

Arrangement:

The Akron Branch American Association of University Women (AAUW) Collection is divided approximately into hird with one third being Branch Minutes, one third being Board Minutes and one third being Miscellaneous Materials. These three categories of items are divided into nine different time periods with each time period consisting of Branch Minutes, Board Minutes and Miscellaneous Materials. A tenth time period (1979-1981) is represented also and consists of a scrapbook of newspaper clippings and other materials relating to AAUW activities.

The ten time periods represented in the collection are as follows: (1931-1935); (1941-1949); (1949-1953); (1953-1955); (1955-1962); (1965-1969); (1969-1970); (1970-1977);1977-1979) and (1970-1981). Most of the minutes are type-written and easily read. They qualify as a nearly complete record of AAUW activities (in Akron) between 1931-1979, with the exception of1936-1940.
