Administrative History:

The Akron Council of Engineering and Scientific Studies (ACESS) was established on April 1st, 1946. The Mission of ACESS is "To enhance the technical environment in the Akron area through coordination and cooperation with the technical societies, industry and academia.(footnote)" ACESS is an organization consisting of technical and scientific societies with an organized speaking voice for the technical community. ACESS represents over 3,000 engineers, scientists and technicians in the greater Akron area.

The effort to form ACESS is due in most part to Tom C. Dee, General Superintendent of Electric Transmission and Distribution of the Ohio Edison Company. Mr. Dee, along with M. B. Rankin and others at the Ohio Edison Company and the Akron District Society of Professional Engineers, took the lead in the formation of a committee to form an Engineering Council in Akron. About the time the committee for establishing an Engineering Council was formed, the Akron Section of the American Chemical Society also began to look into the possibility of forming a similar council. After G.E.P Smith, Jr sent an inquiry to local engineers, the A.C.S. was invited to join the Council.

The objectives and form of organization outlined by Mr. Dee were "cooperation between local engineering and scientific societies and their activities and between the societies and those organizations working on civic and community projects in which the societies are, by reason of their fields of interest and qualification, particularly fitted to be of assistance.(footnote)" Memberships were issued to societies only, not to individual members. The Council consisted of two representatives from each local chapter. Charter-member societies included the Akron District Society of Professional Engineers, the Akron Section of the American Chemical Society, the Akron Section of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, American Institute of Electrical Engineers, the Akron Sub-section, Cleveland Section of the American Society of Civil Engineers, the Akron-Canton Section of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and the Akron Section of the American Institute of Architects.

To date, ACESS Board of Directors comprises two representatives of each member society, plus four elected officers. There are eleven standing committees including Audit, Banquet, Communications, Long Range Planning, Community Relations, Honors and Awards, Education, Nominating, Societies Co-ordination, Speakers Bureau and Inventors Hall of Fame. The Board holds meetings monthly. Member societies include Association for Computing Machinery, American Chemical Society, Akron District Society of Professional Engineers, American Institute of Chemical Engineers, American Society of Civil Engineers, American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, American Society of Safety Engineers, Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, Society of Manufacturing Engineers, and Society of Plastics Engineers.

ACESS provides two annual scholarship awards to local university students, selects an Akron area citizen for the Distinguished Award of Council award and CESS award, recruits judges for the Akron Science and Technology Expo and Western Reserve Science Day, sponsors the annual Honors and Awards Banquet, as well as other services to the community.
