Biographical History:
Dr. James D. D'Ianni was a member of the Research Division of the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company. He became involved in the research of Alfin Rubber when he was invited to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in January, 1945, to observe a technique for the development of Alfin Rubber which had been developed by Dr. Avery A. Morton and his associates. Dr. Morton was a member of the Research Laboratory of Organic Chemistry at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Over the next two years, Dr. D'Ianni and Dr. Morton worked together toward furthering the development of this synthetic rubber known as Alfin Rubber. Dr. D'Ianni and Dr. Morton were not, however, the only members of their institutions to work on this project. Each doctor had a staff of associates who worked along side of the respected doctor, and there were also some outside correspondences (some included in this material) which were used in the studies of each of these doctors and their associates.
Scope and Content:
The material contained in this collection deals with the early development of Alfin rubber. Alfin rubber is a type of synthetic rubber, and Dr. J. D. D'Ianni, of the Research Division of the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, along with Dr. Avery A. Morton, of the Research Laboratory of Organic Chemistry of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, worked toward the development and usage of this rubber. The material contained in this collection includes the correspondences between Dr. D'Ianni, Dr. Morton, and others; various reports, tables, and graphs. The dates of this material covers January 20, 1945 and December 19,1947. This material was donated by Dr. J. D. D'Ianni.
The information on Alfin Rubber within this collection begins with a report from Dr. J. D. D'Ianni to Dr. L. B. Sebrell concerning Dr. D'Ianni's trip to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to view Dr. Avery A. Morton's technique for the development of Alfin Rubber. Contained in this material are two earlier dated reports, one by Dr. D'Ianni and one by Dr. Morton, probably prepared for the meeting which was held on January 20 and 21, 1945.
This information concludes with a letter to Dr. D'Ianni from Dr. Morton which is dated December 19, 1947. However, this letter speaks of an enclosed report by Dr. Morton, which is probably the report which is dated December 18, 1947. This report is entitled, "General Summary of the Program of Research on Alfin Polymerization."
