Introduction
The Willard Penfield Seiberling Collection at the University of Akron Archives contains personal and business correspondence from one of the members of Akron's "founding families" of the rubber and tire industry. While not a complete record of Willard Seiberling's business activities at the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. and Seiberling Rubber Co., it does give some insight into his work as well as his interest in railroads and aviation. The collection is also a source of information on Seiberling family history (especially Franklin A. and Gertrude Seiberling) and the family's landmark residence, Stan Hywet Hall.
In addition to business correspondence, there are printed materials such as catalogues and promotional literature pertaining to rubber products and aviation. Most of the materials pertain to businesses or activities in northeast Ohio, but some of the industry-related information is of national or international scope.
Willard Seiberling's community and avocational interests are also represented in the collection, including several decades of Akron chamber of commerce information and school board reports from the 1940s and 1950s.
While the material in the collection spans the dates from 1859 to 1964, the bulk of the material was generated during or relates to the first half of the twentieth century.
A significant number of photographs and photo negatives are a valuable addition to the textual records of the collection. Willard Seiberling was an avid photographer most of his life, and a sample of his prolific photographic output is included in the collection.
This collection is one of the components of the American History Research Center with its regional and local historic emphasis.
The finding aid for this collection was prepared in 1982, and revised by Eric Brothers in April 2001.
Biographical Information
Willard Penfield Seiberling (June 28, 1892 – April 3, 1981) was the second son of six children of Franklin A. Seiberling, the founder of Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., and Gertrude (Penfield) Seiberling. Willard attended public schools, and graduated from Lawrenceville Preparatory School (New Jersey) in 1911. He attended Princeton University, where he participated in various athletics and served as editor of the school's Pictorial Review. He graduated from Princeton with a degree in economics in 1915.
Interested in aeronautics, Willard saw the Wright Brothers fly in 1909, and became a personal friend of theirs. His fascination with Lighter-Than-Air aeronautics was stirred when Melvin Vaniman interested F. A. Seiberling in building an airship in 1911 to fly the Atlantic. The Goodyear Co. built the rubberized fabric envelope of the airship, which was named the Akron. Willard was to have had a flight in the airship in the autumn of 1911, but a mechanical breakdown prevented it. Willard was in Germany when the Vaniman Akron exploded off the coast of New Jersey in July 1912 killing all five persons aboard.
Between 1916 and 1921, Willard Seiberling was first assistant manager and then manager of the Goodyear Aeronautics Department, where he associated with airship men such as Ralph H. Upson and Herman T. Kraft. In 1921 he was aide to Ward T. Van Orman in the National Balloon Race, in which they placed third. The two also participated in the Gordon Bennett International Balloon Race from Brussels.
In 1921, Franklin A. Seiberling lost control of Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., and founded another Akron rubber firm, Seiberling Tire and Rubber Co., with his brother, Charles W. Seiberling. Willard moved to the new company to serve as manager of accessories and repair materials. In 1941 he became the company secretary, and in 1950 he became a director. He retired in 1960.
Willard Seiberling married Mary Harris Gerrish in 1923 and they started a family. In addition to his business responsibilities, Willard was active in community affairs as a member of the Akron Board of Education, and as a member of the board of trustees of Peoples Hospital (later known as Akron General Hospital). Willard served as board member of both the Akron and Barberton Chambers of Commerce, and served on many Rotary Club committees and on the Barberton Red Cross campaign. He was a member of the Summit County Historical Society and served as president of the Fairlawn Country Club. Willard Seiberling traveled extensively, including seven trips to Germany from 1912 to 1962. Among his many interests was photography, a nearly life-long hobby in which he documented his work, family, and travels. Willard Seiberling died in a one-car auto accident in Michigan in 1981.

Collection Scope and Content
The Willard Penfield Seiberling Collection (formerly known as "The Papers of Willard Penfield Seiberling and Seiberling Family") contains materials dating from 1859 to 1964 donated by the heirs of W. P. Seiberling.
