Administrative History:
The Tuesday Musical Association (TMA) has been credited with cultivating much of the musical appreciation and development in Akron, Ohio. The earliest seeds were planted by a small group of musically accomplished young women who met on a Tuesday afternoon in November of 1887 in the East Market Street home of Mrs. George Baker. While singing societies and instrumental music groups were developing around this time as an outgrowth of the informal musicales performed with family and friends in many homes, such groups were predominately male unlike "the Tuesday Afternoon Club", as it was originally known. Membership was offered only to women with proven musical ability and soon the ladies were performing in area churches and hospitals as well as private homes. Papers on musical subjects presented by members and programs of solo work in voice and piano with part singing were the basis of weekly meetings. Charter members included: Mrs. George Baker (director), Miss Zell Adams, Miss Sibyl Caskey, Miss Ione Edgerton, Miss Martha Herold, Miss Alma Little, Mrs. Lucius C. Miles, Miss Sadie Motz, Mrs. Edward P. Otis, Miss Francis Robinson, Mrs. A.T. Saunders and Mrs. Frank A. Seiberling, who joined the group shortly after the first meeting.
Membership rapidly increased. Formation of the women's chorus was one of the first major activities. In 1895 the Evening Artists' Concert Courses began, predecessor to the present day Concert Series. In 1898, the group completed corporation papers changing the name to the "Tuesday Musical Club" (TMC). The "mixed chorus", both male and female was formed in 1894 after men were admitted to the club by popular vote, followed by an all male chorus, which existed for a few years, until male interest waned. The ladies of the Tuesday Musical Club continued to seek out and foster musical talent in Akron, while busily attracting famous artists and orchestras from throughout the country as the organization evolved over the next century. Venues for performances include: the First Methodist Church, the German-American Music Hall, Akron's Music Hall, the Akron Armory, the Akron Civic Theatre, and its most recent home, the E.J. Thomas Performing Arts Hall.
Gertrude Penfield Seiberling, wife of industrialist Frank A. Seiberling, was honorary President for over half a century and a driving force in the Tuesday Musical Club. Mrs. Seiberling and her daughter, Irene Seiberling Harrison began an auxiliary society, the Saint Cecilia Choral Society in 1921. Stan Hywet Hall became a favorite locality for meetings and afternoon programs. Famous artists and performers for a time became guests in the Seiberling home. Over the years the club has attracted many performers to Akron such as Vladimir Horowitz, Arthur Rubinstein, Eugene List, Isaac Stern, Itzhak Perlman, Lily Pons, Nelson Eddy, Beverly Sills, Luciano Pavorotti, Leontyne Price and many others. A particular favorite of the club, Helen Jepson Dellera, the "Glamour Girl of the Metropolitan Opera", grew up in Akron and was associated with the club throughout her life.
Founded on the principles of music and music sharing, education has been a longtime focus of Tuesday Musical Association. The Brahms Allegro Junior Music Club for elementary to high school students interested in classical music was first sponsored as two groups: the Brahms Junior Music Club and the Allegro Youth Music Club in 1949. Brahms Allegro provides young musicians with opportunities for study and performance. The group participates in music festivals and recitals. Area students may attend TMA's Concert Series, its most obvious sign of musical advocacy, at no cost as provided by the Complimentary Ticket Program. Since 1955, the Tuesday Musical Association has sponsored one of the most comprehensive scholarship programs in Northeast Ohio. Furthering a commitment to foster young talent, the annual scholarships are not only offered to young Ohio singers and instrumentalists, but to those interested in music education as well.
While the Tuesday Musical Association, as it is known today, after briefly being known as "Tuesday Musical" in early 2000, was not a unique organization during the heyday of the musical recital business, it is distinguished by its ability to not only survive but to continue to thrive in the dual areas of culture and education. The Tuesday Musical Association continues to sponsor musical concerts and special events for the public and afternoon musical programs for members and guests. While members still perform, membership is now open to anyone with an appreciation of music. It is a nonprofit organization that remains volunteer managed while continuing to grow and evolve.
Scope and Content:
The Tuesday Musical Association collection consists primarily of material relating to the administration, activities, and history of the association. This includes minutes, financial information, scrapbooks, programs, yearbooks, newspaper clippings, correspondence, photographs, VHS and cassette tapes, and memorabilia as well as an assortment of materials chronicling the survival and development of a small women's group into a well defined association. Whenever possible, original order of material was maintained.
This collection would be of interest to scholars researching the history of Akron, Ohio, musical appreciation groups popular across the country in the early 20th century, women's history, music, and altruistic organizations.
Arrangement:
The material is divided into groups or series. Series A is composed of the administrative/organizational records of the Tuesday Musical Association. Executive Board meeting minutes, general meeting minutes, annual reports, financial information, scholarship information, correspondence, newsletters, programs, and information concerning the activities of TMA are arranged chronologically in each folder with emphasis on original order. Relations do exist across numerous other series. The Executive Board meeting minutes are the most valuable when considering the history and activities of the organization. These records are the most consistent and detailed. Also of significant interest is information concerning the Brahms-Allegro Junior Music Club that is otherwise limited to the scrapbooks. Records cover years 1951-2002 at varying levels of completeness and folders are organized by season, more or less following the concert calendar. In the earlier years, seasons ran from August to June; however, as the Association developed it became a year round enterprise and most recently, seasons run from June to June.
In 1965, the need of one central location for records storage was identified. Previous records were referred to as "scattered, possibly accounting for a lack of prior material. In response, TMA opened its first office that same year with a member acting as a part time secretary. As years progressed, the Association evolved, staffing was increased and the quality of record keeping improved. Administrative records from 1989 to 2002 are the most comprehensive. Records are generally handwritten, typed, computer generated, or floppy disc. The Code of Regulations or Bylaws are included in this series as organizational records.
Series B consists of programs. Concert Series programs are listed first, followed by the afternoon programs presented in conjunction with general membership meetings. Concert Series programs are organized by season beginning with the 34th season, 1922-1923. However, the collection is not complete and gaps exist between seasons and within seasons. Relations exist with other series, particularly the scrapbooks, which also include programs, as well as administrative/organizational records and the yearbooks which contain complete listings of the concert season. Information contained within the programs includes a variety of topics: executive board membership, scholarship winners, advertising, upcoming events, sponsorship, and the Tuesday Musical Association. Season brochures offer an overview of performances and program notes contain biographical information about the performers as well as analysis and historical aspects of the music to be performed. The 100th Anniversary season program, October 6, 1987 includes proclamations and historical programs. The Afternoon programs contain information on performances by members, scholarship winners or special guests. This includes translations, notes on the music being performed, and biographical information on the performers in the later years. Such information is not consistent and gaps do exist. Afternoon programs can also be found in the administrative/organizational records, scrapbooks, and a listing for the season is provided in the appropriate yearbook. Series C provides information on individual concerts including publicity, ticketing sales, reviews and photographs. A variety of information is also included such as contracts (with the performer and venue), press releases, correspondence, and flyers. Some seasons are complete but information can be sporadic across the spectrum especially in earlier years. Relations exist between Concert Series Programs, Yearbooks, Scrapbooks and Financials. Yearbooks can be found in Series D. These annual publications, printed for each season, contain a variety of information and were continually revised and expanded. Depending on the season, information includes: dates for meetings, the concert schedule, the Club Woman's Creed, membership directory, committee members, bylaws, rules, and regulations, articles of incorporation, bequests, scholarships, history, scholarships, St. Cecilia Choral Society and the National Federation of Music Clubs. Gaps remain but relations exist between the administrative organizational records and the scrapbooks. Series E contains information relating to the educational outreach provided by the Tuesday Musical Association. It is divided into the major areas of scholarships and Brahms Allegro Junior Music Club. Scholarship applications/auditions, correspondence, procedural aspects, and clippings dominate the series. Audition cassette tapes, photographs of winners and VHS are included. Collection levels are sporadic and range from complete to minimal throughout the years. Relations exist between Administrative Records, Programs, Yearbooks, and Scrapbooks. While viewed as educational outreach, primary information on Brahms Allegro is almost exclusively found in Administrative Records or the Scrapbooks.
