Administrative History:

In the collection are photos and documentation dating to the activities of the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co.’s Aeronautics Dept., which built manned observation and spherical balloons, non-rigid blimps and semi-rigid airships in Akron, Ohio, from prior to World War I until the formation of Goodyear-Zeppelin in 1923.

Goodyear-Zeppelin Corporation materials include photographs and technical data brought from Germany at the inception of the corporation, formed as a partnership of Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. with the German firm uftschiffbau-Zeppelin to build rigid airships in the United States. Specifications and weight data for some German-built zeppelins date to 1915. Many of the materials are reproduced using the blueprint cyanotype or similar "printing-out" processes, and are in a fragile state. There are also some component-drawings and publicity materials for the German passenger zeppelins of the 1930s: the Graf Zeppelin, Graf Zeppelin 2, and Hindenburg.

Many materials from this era pertain to the effort of Goodyear-Zeppelin Corporation to design and manufacture two large dirigibles for the U.S. Navy, the ZRS-4 (U.S.S. Akron) and ZRS-5 (U.S.S. Macon). The government contract was awarded in 1928, and the airships were constructed from 1929-1933. Artifacts include the factory construction logbooks and several hundred black-and-white photographs showing the stages in the giant airships’ assembly. Some of the non-aeronautic products that G-Z produced are also documented briefly, as are foreign competitors’ airship products, including British and Italian airships.

By the late 1930s, the company’s emphasis moved away from rigid airship design to include specifications and design data on non-rigid airships for pilot training and patrol. The U.S. Navy would eventually acquire more than 150 of these Akron-built blimps during World War II (1939-1945).

The Goodyear Aircraft Corporation was formed in December 1939 as a separate operating unit of Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. after the Nazi invasion of Poland in September 1939 and war in Europe made it impossible for Goodyear-Zeppelin Corp. (with it ties to belligerent Germany) to bid on U.S. government contracts. The Zeppelin-Goodyear partnership was dissolved completely in February 1941. By this time, Goodyear Aircraft Corporation (GAC) was already becoming a major defense contractor. During WWII, GAC built Corsair airplanes under license and airplane sub-assemblies for more than twenty different aircraft types used by the Allies, as well as building blimps for the U.S. Navy. Items from this era include numerous contact-print photo proofs showing the manufacture of Navy blimps that GAC built during this era, as well as construction specifications, data, correspondence and engineering reports on the airship types.

GAC continued to build non-rigid airships for the U.S. Navy during the early part of the Cold War. In this collection are non-rigid airship prospectuses, press clippings, correspondence, and engineering reports from the late 1940s through the late-1950s, plus photographs of the airship types produced. The company’s interest in building large rigid airships did not disappear entirely during this time, and some documents and proposals for post-WWII rigid airships (never built) are also in the collection. Some of the aerospace products made by the corporation (missile components, guidance systems, radar antennas, etc.) during this era are mentioned briefly in some materials, but most items pertain to lighter-than-air.

Goodyear Aircraft Corporation was renamed the Goodyear Aerospace Corporation in 1963 to better reflect the diversity of products it was supplying to the aerospace industry. None of the items in the accession of materials relate to business activity during this era or from any later time periods. Goodyear sold the assets of its aerospace division to defense contractor Loral Systems Group in the wake of a hostile corporate take-over attempt in 1986. Loral, in turn, sold the former GAC assets to aerospace conglomerate Lockheed Martin in 1993. At the dawn of the 21st Century, Lockheed Martin continued the corporate lighter-than-air heritage by producing tethered aerostats for communications and surveillance applications, and by developing designs for unmanned high-altitude airships.

Scope and Content:

In August 1999, Lockheed Martin Corporation’s Akron-based unit, Lockheed Martin Tactical Defense Systems – Akron (now known as Lockheed Martin Naval Electronics and Surveillance Systems – Akron), donated a portion of its archival "vault" materials to the University of Akron. The materials, comprising approx. 28 cubic feet, were generated or used by the company’s predecessor organizations: the Goodyear Aeronautics Dept. (1916-1923), Goodyear-Zeppelin Corp. (1923-1941), Goodyear Aircraft Corp. (1940-1963), Goodyear Aerospace Corp. (1963-1987) and Loral Systems Group (1987-1993).

The materials consist of textual records (e.g., reports, printed matter, drawings) and photographs (loose and in albums, plus glass lantern slides). Items in this accession range in date from 1916 to 1959. Subject matter pertains primarily to airships (dirigibles), but also includes some information on corporate organization and other aircraft (subject categories are identified in the Series Notes).

Included in the accession are engineering and technical reports on the design and operation of various airships, reproductions of airship general arrangement and parts drawings (blueprints and other photo-mechanically reproduced documents), promotional documents (prospectuses, brochures), photographs of airship manufacturing and assembly, plus oversize albums showcasing photographs and illustrative artwork.

Arrangement:

The Lockheed Martin Collection currently is organized into the following series, with items arranged more or less alphabetically within series:

Notes and Abbreviations used in this finding aid

Please note: All artifact dimensions are in inches

Oversize and Large Oversize items are noted with a boldface identifier in the description and grouped intellectually with their appropriate Series A through F. The item descriptions are repeated in the listings for the items’ physical location (e.g., oversize box contents). Series G, H (photo-related) items are listed separately.

Abbreviations: Ovr = Oversize; Lg Ovr = Large Oversize; Long Ovr = Long Oversize

H = height, W = width, D = depth or thickness

G-Z = Goodyear-Zeppelin, GAC = Goodyear Aircraft Corp., USN = U. S. Navy

Regardless of origin, dates are abbreviated in English, and a period, not comma, is used for decimal points.

"Blueprint" indicates white line on blue background photo-mechanically reproduced image; "diazo" as used here represents blue line on white or magenta line on cream background photo-mechanically reproduced drawings, although the actual process or trade name may be different.

Box-and-Folder identification precedes listings. For specific "Oversize," "Long Oversize" and "Large Oversize" item location, see the grouped oversize listings (OV-#) following the series listings.

Almost all of the items at folder or envelope level carry an L-prefix, five-digit code number (L00000) given to the items when they were part of the Goodyear Aerospace Corporation Library. The L-number is/was usually printed on an adhesive label attached to each item. An "Index" that includes these numbered items is to be found in photocopy form in the Goodyear Aviation Collection (Box 2, Airship and Balloon, General-Corporate files). The Index, circa 1975, is a computer-generated printout of a brief title/description matched to code number, and reflects the arbitrary sequence in which items were numbered at Goodyear Aerospace Corporation. The items, or their main category headings, are numbered L00001 to L01842 (please note, only a fraction of all L-number items are in this accession; see Appendix A for list). The L-numbers are retained in this finding aid as a supplementary reference since the current box-folder identification supercedes them.

L-numbers listed below are not necessarily unique identifiers for the items described because some items have been separated into more specific sub-groups from the pre-existing headings.

Listings follow this format for each series (some folders may have more than one item; each has a separate entry):
