The Canal Society of Ohio
Introduction
Throughout its existence, The Canal Society of Ohio (CSO)
(established in 1961) has collected a wide range of materials relating to
the history and development of canals in Ohio. These items form the
Canal Society of Ohio Collection, which the Society has donated to The
University of Akron for inclusion in the University’s Archives.
The collection is open under the rules and regulations of the
University’s Archival Services.
USING THIS INVENTORY: For a collection of
this size, it would not be practicable to prepare a listing of every
item. In the folder-level descriptions in this inventory, an effort has
been made to identify some of the key items. Please be aware, however,
that "includes" indicates a selective listing and is not
intended to be all inclusive of the contents of a folder.

Scope and Content
The collection consists primarily of materials relating to the
planning, construction, use, operation, and rebuilding of canals in Ohio.
Many of the items are not originals, but are copies of documents. There
are some items concerning canals in other states and countries.
There is very little information on the individuals who built
and operated the canals and canal boats. In other words, minimal
genealogical information is available through this collection.
The collection is divided into the following five series:
- Series A: Documents
-
- Series B: Periodicals
- Mainly journals, bulletins, and newsletters
of canal societies in the United States and abroad.
- Series C: Canal Society of Ohio Tour Guides
- CSO conducts tours for members and other
interested people, usually twice a year, of various sections of canals
around the state and in neighboring states. A tour guide is prepared for
most of these events to enhance the tour experience and for a lasting
record.
- Series D: Photographs
- Prints, slides, and negatives from the
nineteenth century to the present. Includes some prints of high quality,
while others are copies of copies.
- Series E: Maps and Oversized Materials
- Includes topographical and other maps,
oversized drawings, and other similar material.
