Cataloging Audiobooks

Introduction
An audiobook contains the recording of a reading of a book, magazine, or other printed material, stored on one or more cassette tapes or compact discs; originally designed for the use of the visually impaired.
Classification
Audiobooks are not classified. Instead they are given accession numbers and filed in acquisition order in Audio-Visual Services. Accession numbers are created as follows:

Description
- Record the original author of the audiobook in the main entry tag (100, 110) and in the statement of responsibility (245c). Example:

- If the item in hand represents an abridged version of the original, note this in the edition field (250). Example:

- Record production date in the 260c. Example:

- individual tape/disc titles in the 505 contents notes, with running times if available. Example:

- Record producer, director, abridgment writer, etc. in the 508 tag. Example:

- Record reader, narrator, performer(s) in the 511 performance credits note. Example:

- Always add a summary note (520). Example:

- Provide adequate access through assignment of appropriate subject headings for fiction and nonfiction titles. Example:
