Original Cataloging of UA Dissertations
Contents:
Background Information
At the end of spring, summer and fall semesters a number of graduate students receive their Ph. D. degrees and if their college requires a dissertation, two copies of that dissertation come to the Bierce Library. These copies arrive as loose-leaf manuscripts and are initially processed in two ways: 1 copy is prepared for the bindery (the circulating copy) and the other copy is prepared for shipment to UMI for micro-processing (the Archives copy). When the dissertations return from the bindery, they are sent to the Cataloging Department for original cataloging. Questions on the initial processing of dissertations and theses can be directed to Carmella Farruggia [email: carmell@uakron.edu]
CAUTION! Watch out for dissertations marked Hold for Patent! One copy of these dissertations is sent to the U.S. Patent Office to register a patent on a process, etc. and cannot be released for general usage until the patent registration is complete!!
Procedures for Original Cataloging
TIP: OCLC Guidelines for Cataloging Theses and Dissertations is located at http://www.oclc.org/bibformats/en/specialcataloging/#CHDIHHJH
Dissertations require original cataloging and the creation of these records is performed in the OCLC system
Guidelines:
- Login to OCLC as usual
- Just to be on the safe side, ALWAYS search the dissertation title before cataloging!
- If no record is found, create a new record using the WFM command.
- You can apply a constant data record to your workflow that will add the primary required dissertation fields.
