Adding Newbery/Caldecott Information

Written by Karen A. Plummer

Caldecott/Newbery Award Winner and Honors Books

The library has a standing order for many of the award books for children. Most of the award and honor books are given no special handling. The exceptions to this rule are the titles which receive the annual Caldecott and Newbery medals.

Usually three copies of each of these award titles are received at the same time. Occasionally, the library has already acquired and cataloged one or more copies of these titles. All copies are retained.

When cataloging a Newbery/Caldecott title, it is necessary that title be accessible by the name of the award. Please differentiate between the books that receive the Newbery Award medal and those listed as "honors" titles. To provide access, a 586 note is added to the bibliographic record:

586 Newbery award book for YYYY
586 Newbery honor book for YYYY
586 Caldecott award book for YYYY

This note provides the justification for the locally assigned series which is traced in an 830 field:

830 0 Newbery award books ; ‡v YYYY
830 0 Newbery honor books ; ‡v YYYY
830 0 Caldecott award books ; ‡v YYYY

Otherwise, these materials are cataloged the same as any other juvenile title.

They do, however, require special physical processing. Each is to be identified by a label on the spine giving the year and the award, so this information must be supplied to the physical processing unit. Often the dust jacket includes an impression of the award medal, which is cut off and glued to the cover of the book. Be sure to send the dust jacket to physical processing along with the book.
