PZ Reclassification Project
Written by Joy Ramos, with Christine Rigda
Rationale
PZ class 3 and 4 are obsolete (see Obsolete Classification numbers) and need to be reclassified to PR-PS call numbers. These call numbers are assigned by using MILCAT, OhioLINK, or OCLC-DLC later editions and Authority File, or the schedules and tables
Procedures
- Search the book in MILCAT to see if works by the author have been cataloged out of the PZ range or if there is an author authority file record with a call number established.
- If nothing is found, search the OCLC authority file for the author
- Select Authorities from the menu bar.
- Select Search from the drop-down menu, then select Authority File
OR
Use the shortcut <Shift><F2>. - Possible searches:
- Command line search (top box on search window): Example: sca pn steinbeck, john
- Keyword search in second box on search window. Select type of search from drop-down menu on right.
Example: steinbeck, j Personal names
- In the above example, use the base number of PS3537.T3234. If you had the title The Red Pony, you would consult the Cutter Tables and INNOPAC (to make sure it fits in alphabetically) and assign R43 (this is just an example since the title has already been cataloged by LC as R4!)
- If no class number is available, you may also consult the OhioLINK Central Catalog to see if other institutions have assigned a number.
- If there is no assigned number to be found for a lesser known author, give the book to a cataloger.
- Books receive the OCLC # and the new call # and then are placed on the ordinary booktruck with a note : "New label" and your initials.
Tip
If you are having difficulty find a call number, check for DLC records for all the works of the author. An appropriate classification # may be available.
Subject Access
There is also a goal of giving some subject access to works of fiction:
- Subjects may be obtained through searches given above, but especially through the OCLC-DLC searches for later editions. Subjects may then be added to these older records.
- If no subject is available through searching, consult the summary of the book in the 520 field (if it's available) the Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH) guide and INNOPAC.
Exporting the Record
There has been a question of whether to export a newly edited and modified record from OCLC into INNOPAC, due to a major "overhaul" of the record. If in your best judgment, it is easier and faster to edit in OCLC, then download rather than modifying the record in INNOPAC, just overlay the old record.
Other Considerations
- Replacement Copies
- Copies too fragile for reclassification will need to be evaluated by subject bibliographer(s) Dr. Diana Chlebek, and Dr. Roger Durbin for decisions as to keep, possibly relocate to Archives, or for usage to purchase replacement copies. The status is "d" for damaged and these copies would be kept on the shelves in Joy Ramos' area, for review.
- Missing Copies
- Copies which are not located "m" for missing status, or are not directly retrievable, i.e. in circulation, need to have "c" in the item message and a note added field "x" : "Give to 'your name' in cataloging for reclass"... if found or returned.
- Multiple Copies
- Another situation may occur, if there are two or more copies on a record and you can find only one copy. Proceed to reclass the item in hand (with call # and subjects in bibliographic record) and insert into the item record a " c" for " imessage", an "m" for missing in status and the PZ # in the item call # field "c". Add a note saying: "Give to 'your name' in cataloging for reclass."
