Application
This page describes job opportunities at Bierce Library and the Science & Technology Library. There are many interesting Student Assistant positions available with University Libraries. We offer a flexible work schedule; day, evening and weekend hours; attractive surroundings; wonderful staff and faculty to work with; and a variety of interesting and challenging work. However, only serious applicants need apply.

University of Akron full-time students can bring a completed Student Assistant application to the
University Libraries' Office, Room 161(UL Dean's Office), Bierce Library, or come in to complete an application . Students can also take an application to the Science & Technology Library at Auburn Science Center, Room 104. Applicants must know their current academic schedule and meet employment qualifications. Graduate assistants are not eligible to work as student employees. New applications are accepted each semester.

Acquisitions
This department is a technical service area. Students working in this department are usually needed Monday through Friday between the hours of 8-5. These students will assist with monographic invoices, prepare invoices for accounts payable, photocopy and file paid invoices, run computer printouts, prepare credit memos for returns and help with problem solving. The students must be able to work independently.
Archives
Archives is a public service area located in the Polsky Building. Students working in this department will be required to work Monday through Friday between the hours of 8-5. They will be expected to lift and place boxes on shelves, prepare and check lists of materials, and assist in retireving or delivering records. Required: ability to lift up to 30 lbs., ability to walk 2 miles, aptitude for detail work. Knowledge of WordPerfect preferred.
Audio-Visual Services
There are three student employment areas available in AV services:
Audio Visual Technician--
Students are responsible for delivery and set-up of audio visual equipment at various locations around campus. Some light troubleshooting of equipment is also included. Not used to using av equipment? Have no fear, you will receive training. However, you must be dependable and have good time management and customer service skills. Work schedule is flexible (Monday through Friday).
Database Scheduling/Customer Support--
Students working at the front desk are required to have excellent customer service skills when speaking with library patrons in-person and over the telephone. Students are responsible for assisting the library patrons by scheduling audio visual equipment, using a database computer program, and helping locate various media housed by the library. Other duties include: typing (35+ wpm), filing, conducting inventory, and various duties assigned. Work schedule is flexible seven days a week.
Assistant to Electronic Technician--
Assist the staff technician to install and maintain 140 technology-enhanced classrooms on campus. Student will also assist in the repair of audio visual equipment. Student must have an in-born aptitude for, and some experience in, practical hands-on electronic and mechanical installations and troubleshooting.
Preferred work schedule is in blocks of time on Monday through Friday between the hours of 7:00 a.m. - Noon, and Noon – 5:00 p.m. Student needs to be available during breaks and intersessions.
Cataloging
This is a technical service department. Students working in this department are usually needed Monday through Friday between the hours of 8-5. Duties may include: order processing for new library materials; barcoding and inputting or deleting location/copy information into the online catalog; data entry for The University of Akron theses and recital tapes; previewing videos; filing; and light typing. Computer keyboarding skills and aptitude for detail a must.
Circulation
The circulation department is responsible for the shelving and maintenance of the library collection. Other major responsibilities include helping patrons check-out and check-in books; collecting fines; locating missing items; and processing and repairing books. Students interested in the circulation department should be energetic and dependable. Circulation provides flexible scheduling, allowing an individual to work nights and weekends. Circulation has a diverse mix of students from many fields; this makes for an enjoyable work environment.
Dean's Office
Student assistant work in the UL Dean's Office consists of functioning as receptionist (answering telephones, greeting patrons), typing, filing
ordering supplies, and other miscellaneous duties as requested
Reference
This is a public service department. Students will be trained to locate information for library patrons. Students will assist at the Reference/Information Desk and at the Microforms desk. Applicants must be able to follow directions, possess qualities of logic and organizational skills, and work well on their own. Duties may also include physical processing of documents including labeling and filing. These positions may require evening and weekend hours.
Reserves
The Reserve Room is located on the ground floor of Bierce Library. The Reserve Room contains the latest journals, magazines and newspapers, plus course materials placed on reserve by University faculty. Students working in this area are responsible for shelving the reserve materials and periodicals and assisting patrons in searching for any information they may need. Students who work in the Reserve Room must have good interpersonal skills, be very dependable, and be able to work without constant supervision.
Science & Technology Library
Student employees perform a variety of duties in the Science & Technology Library. Student employees staff the circulation and laptop service desks where books and laptop are checked-in and checked-out. They re-shelve books and periodicals, maintain the book stacks in call number order, and assist library users with equipment like printers and photocopiers. Student employees may also work on a variety of projects like shifting the collection, shelf-reading, and collection inventory.
