Browsing through resources in the reference collection on the first floor of Bierce Library can be very helpful in choosing a topic for research. Many reference sources contain a bibliography for each entry. Use the following reference books to begin your research.

- WorldCat -A combined catalog of libraries from around the world. When you find an item you want, check to see if it is available in the UA Libraries Catalog or OhioLINK. If not, request the item with ILLiad.

There are no articles in the UA Libraries Catalog or OhioLINK. You must search the following databases to find articles on your topic. Use a 'keyword' search to locate a relevant article, then use the 'subject' or 'descriptor' field to locate similar items. When you find an article in any database you must check the UA Libraries Catalog for the journal title. If Akron does not have the article you need, you must request the article with ILLiad.
Electronic databases
- Academic Search Premier -The world’s largest scholarly, multi-discipline, full text database designed specifically for academic institutions. This resource indexes over 4300 periodicals and contains full text for over 3400 scholarly publications.
- Arts and Humanities Citation Index Expanded -Arts & Humanities Citation Index is a multidisciplinary database covering the journal literature of the arts and humanities. It indexes 1,144 of the world's leading arts and humanities journals, as well as covering individually selected, relevant items from over 6,800 major science and social science journals.
- ERIC (Educational Resources Information Center -U.S. Department of Education source for education-related research, documents, and journal articles.
- Humanities Full-Text -Contains full text for over 350 journals of interest in art, philosophy, history, communications, and general interest.
- Infotrac Full-Text Articles -Index to citations in 1,000 journals with full-text access to almost 900 journals. Covers many subject areas at the undergraduate level.
- Inside Information Plus -Inside Information Plus describes articles appearing in 21,000 of the most-requested titles in the British Library Document Supply Centre's collection of 65,000 serials.
- Music Index -The Music Index covers over 670 journal titles relating to music and the performing arts.
- RILM (Répertoire International de Littérature Musicale) - An international bibliography of scholarly writings on music and related disciplines, RILM contains over 140 languages, is classified by topic, and includes original-language titles; title translations in English; full bibliographic information; abstracts in English; author, subject, and periodical indexes.
- SPORT Discus -SPORTDiscus is considered to be the world's leading sport, fitness and sports medicine bibliographic database. It contains more than 500,000 references, 20,000 theses and dissertations, 10,000 website addresses and links to full-text articles.

Much research is never published in a journal or in a book. Use the following to find more research on your topic. When you find an item in any database you must check the UA Libraries Catalog for the title. If Akron does not have the item you need, you must request the item with ILLiad.
- Digital Dissertations -Online access to Dissertation Abstracts plus the full text in PDF format.
- Papers First -Citations to individual papers presented at conferences worldwide.
