(More to be added)

teenager

Hopkins University Press.
Outcome Assessment
Distribute questionnaires to families of pediatric newly
diagnosed
patients at the time of their first endocrinologist visit.
The
participants
will evaluate the diabetes education program based on:
- Understanding of basic disease
functioning
- Adequate information
provided about
- diet
-
medication
- exercise
- Coping mechanisms for pain and shots
- How to handle sick days
- What to do at school with peers,
talking to
teachers, and friends.
- Explanation to patent (and siblings)
in
appropriate manner
Efficiency Analysis
I
will do the questionnaire using quantifiable measures and establishing
a codebook.
After that I don’t really know what I would do with my data. I propose
having
about 30 questions in the questionnaire. I know I can do means and SD
but what
other methods of analysis should/could I use? Any ideas here.
In
addition, I know program monitoring is a step but I just wanted to
evaluate the
“after math” of the program. Do I have to do program monitoring for
reliability?
What Rhonna has proposed is really two, possibly three studies - each
one deserving of attention on its own merits. For your proposal,
you might just consider Topics 1 and 2 as prelimenary to Topic 3, which
is your main concern, if I read your proposal correctly.
Part 1: The Defining Diabetes
Education
What you will want to document is the extent/prevalence of diabetes
among children nationally and in the local area.
Divide this part of your literature review into sections that make the
most sense - What is Diabetes, Extent of Diabetes among children under
15 years of age??, the extent of information for parents and children
on the topic of diabetes and advocacy for children, and so on.
The Diabetes Association at http://www.diabetes.org provides, as you
mention, good information on initial questions about Diabetes
Education,
The pages at http://www.diabetes.org/for-parents-and-kids.jsp.
You would want to use these pages as citations for your literature
review section on Diabetes Education (topic 2). Same for the Joslin
Diabetes Center http://www.joslin.org/index.asp-
Joslin Diabetes Center
and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation
http://www.jdrf.org/index.cfm?page_id=103438
You still need to find more sources on the topic of Diabetes Education,
as opposed to research on the disease itself.
Keep focused on the idea of education, not prevention or medical
research.
To that end - looking for educational materials and assessment of
knowledge levels about childhood diabetes among caregivers and parents,
your literature review should have a major section on this topic - What
Parents Need to Know About Childhood Diabetes.
From this section, you should be able to construct the questionnaire
you propose in the next step.
Part 2: What you call "Outcome Assessment" is really Needs
Assessment for Diabetes Education.
Distribute questionnaires to families of pediatric newly
diagnosed
patients at the time of their first endocrinologist visit.
You initially said participants will
evaluate the diabetes education program, but you don't have a diabetes
program as yet.
So: The
participants
will be assessed on their knowledge of:
- Understanding of basic disease
functioning
- Adequate information
provided about 1) diet
2) medication, and 3) exercise
- Coping mechanisms for pain and shots
- How to handle sick days
- What to do at school with peers,
talking to
teachers, and friends.
- Explanation to patent (and siblings)
in
appropriate manner
Keep in mind - that each of the
knowledge areas will have to have 1) some literature review citations
on which to legitimate the questions, and 2) some specific questions
about each topic area. For example, Understanding of Basic
Disease Functioning?? would require several questions to test a
parent's knowledge about how the functioning of their child will change
as a result of the disease. You would want to be able to offer
parents questions with one best choice (like a multiple choice
examination). The idea is to allow level of knowledge
help to formulate the teaching modules in the education program.
If there already is a diabetes
education program at the hospital you choose, then you would use your
questionnaire as a kind of Pre-program test.
I
will do the questionnaire using quantifiable measures and establishing
a codebook.
After that I don’t really know what I would do with my data. I propose
having
about 30 questions in the questionnaire. I know I can do means and SD
but what
other methods of analysis should/could I use? Any ideas here.
The design of your questionnaire items should be aided by what the
literature saus about how much parents already know and what they need
to know.
The education program should cover all these topics - your
questionnaire will detect what parents know before education and can
assess what they've learned (pre-test minus post-test results) . For
each questionnaire item you might have a pre-post test comparision
(t-tests) which would indicate what the educaton program has
accomplished. If you group the t-tests into the same
categories as mentioned above (i.e., understanding,
diet/medication/exercise information, coping etc.),
you will be able to see if the educational program is getting the
points across in each category.
A t-test table for the questions in each category will allow you to
"see" if the program is getting its points across.
Topic 3: Efficiency Analysis - this is
really Assessment of the Educational Program (see above)
Do I have to do program monitoring
for
reliability? Actually, program monitoring is achieved
everytime you assess what people are taking from the program.
