I feel like I am a little stuck on
what to write for my draft. I am doing the non-thesis option and
taking
the additional credits. I talked to Ms. Resler about ideas of
what to do
for possibly my internship project next spring. However, she said
it has
to be a tangible item the hospital needs me to do not so much research.
I was thinking about a parent handbook with links of resources.
I
am also interested in bereavement and sibling support groups.
Bereavement in children, adolescents and their surviving parents
Biological Psychiatry, Vol. 42, Issue: 1, July 1, 1997. pp.
200S Weller,
E.
Five percent of children and adolescents lose a parent by the age
fifteen. Most research done in this area is methodologically flowed or
retrospective. In this presentation a brief review of the literature
will be followed by a presentation focusing on looking at bereavement
as a model to study depression. Data from an ongoing study funded by
the National Institute of Mental Health will be presented in a
developmental manner followed by individual statements by children,
adolescents and…

Childhood Bereavement Following Parental Death
Journal
of Child Psychology and Psychiatry, Vol. 41, Issue: 7,
October 2000. pp. 819-830
Dowdney,
Linda
Psychological outcomes in children who have experienced the death of a
parent are heterogeneous. One child in five is likely to develop
psychiatric disorder. In the year following bereavement, children
commonly display grief, distress, and dysphoria. Nonspecific emotional
and behavioural difficulties among children are often reported by
surviving parents and the bereaved children themselves. The highest
rates of reported difficulties are found in boys. This review
identifies the…
Bereavement care interventions: a systematic review
BMC

Amanda; Hill,
Malinda; Pazder,
Rachel; Feudtner,
Chris
Background Despite abundant bereavement care options, consensus is
lacking regarding optimal care for bereaved persons. Methods We
conducted a systematic review, searching MEDLINE, PsychINFO, CINAHL,
EBMR, and other databases using the terms (bereaved or bereavement)…
Assessing
children's and teenagers' bereavement when a sibling dies from cancer:
a secondary analysis
Child:
Care, Health and Development, Vol. 26, Issue: 5, September
1, 2000. pp. 381-400
Birenbaum,
L K
Summary
The purposes of this paper are to: (1) provide conceptual and empirical
descriptions of the most frequently reported children's and teenagers'
responses in anticipation of and after the death of a sibling from
cancer; (2) describe these behaviours by age groups (3-5, 6-11 and
12-19 years); and (3) discuss the clinical utility of two new scales
measuring children's bereavement. The literature review and an
exploratory secondary analysis from a prospective longitudinal design
were used to…
Bereavement: A Framework for those Working with Children

This
article aims to describe psychological factors which help or hinder
coping with bereavement in childhood. Children can and do cope with the
death of those close to them if they know what is happening and have
the appropriate support to cope. However, children suffering from loss
are likely to be in the care of adults who are also grieving and there
is a need to support the adults and to mobilize other resources for the
child. We discuss the timing and appropriateness of interventions from…

possibly do research on the benefits of a Child Life Program and its
impact. (see the notes on Cheryl's idea)
